Talking Dealer trip...pull the chip?

Hi MIke, I was talking to you on the auto popping out of second thread.. I have an appointment for tuesday morning to get my trans, leaky differential, and knocking engine checked out....Boy,when the trouble started,it happened QUICK! I should pull the chip out when I take it in,right? As for no other reason than preventing them from denying my warranty claims. I am praying my heavy foot didn't cause all this trouble. Once it's fixed,I promise to keep my foot off the gas...... (yeah right!)hehe. I'll probably get the plus 4's put in while their under the hood, They've been in the door pocket for two months and I'm itching to see the gains from them. ,,,,,98

Cool

Exactly as I thought, thanks. Now you just have to fly all over the country training techs to deal with the chips.....On second thought it "would" be easier just to pull it.......Let you know how everything turns out. Funny thing though, I tied back the harness that touches the a/c condensor
and it STOPPED THE BAD IDLE!!! I just sort of blew it off when I first heard of that solution, I didn't have idling trouble til a few weeks ago. So,it wasn't that important at the time. Boy did it make a difference! It was sputtering and weezing
and I pulled the wire back and it smoothed up immediately. TTYS,,,,98

Hi Screamer,

We do advise pulling the Superchip prior to service, but not because of warranty considerations. We advise this simply so that the technician doesn't have any problems when they connect your vehicle to the SBDS (service bay diagnostic system). Having the Superchip installed during diagnostics will not interfere with that process, but with the Superchip attached there will be another error code reported, it's a P0605 code I think, that tells the technician that the computers internal eprom chip is not functioning, and because it's not replaceable, to replace the computer! In other words, they think the computer has actually failed because that chip is not functioning, most techs do not know how that external override data path circuit works. You see, when you attach the Superchip, engaging the circuit tells the comptuer to turn off it's internal eprom chip, and to seek it's instructions externally, via the Superchip. So the factory eprom chip is not supposed to be working with the Superchip attached, that's the whole idea, to avoid using that factory program! Conversely, when you remove the Superchip, that circuit acts like an on/off switch, and turns back on the factory eprom chip.

Now with our vehicles here at Performance, we do leave our chips in, and I have gone in and personally trained the technicians at our dealership on what to expect and what to do about it, but that's because of who we are of course. Most people do not have the detailed knowledge of how all this works, so it's just easier to avoid a situation where you're in effect trying to tell a technician their job, basically, by simple removing it prior to service.

Hi Screamer,

You're right, and it's been awhile since we discussed moving that harness/wiring away, but it's been found to help the idle quality and overall power even a bit in a number of these vehicles, I'm glad you found that litle "trick".

Good luck!

Is it the moisture? or an unwelcome grounding at that point that causes that.
I noticed a small tab wrapped in the harness there, looks like it was attached
somewhere, then let go over time. Wierd thing is the truck will go back and forth between idle qualities, now. Spends more time idling well so I'm not complaining.
The transmission seems to act better now, too. It's not 100% better, but it's definitely better. Pulling the chip tomm. afternoon, for the dealer trip Tues.,,,,,,,,98

Can you post a pic of the harness you are talking about? Or maybe a more detailed description? My new truck (3k miles) seems to idle a bit rough, and I want to check your sollution before anything more drastic...

Thanks

Cool

Standing by the pass. side fender, look between the valve cover and the fender well . If it's the same as the 98's,there will be a small silver can shaped container just above the a/c compressor. This will be the condensor. Just to the rear of this
(maybe resting on it) will be the harness in question. I tied it back with some tie wraps,to the metal part of the hose that runs to the rear of it. It's a little difficult if you have large hands(like me,lol) But it did seem to help the idle. Hope it's detailed enough,Let me know and I'll try to
take some pics(it's a pretty confined area)
Good luck,,,,98

That should be enough detail. I will take a look the next time I can in the daylight. Thanks!

I think I read somewhere they figure it's static from the compressed gas flowing through the metal dryer bleeding into the inputs of the pcm. I have mine tied back.

Hi Screamer,

It appears to be a grounding type of issue, from what I understand, though I am by no means an authority on this. Back when this was being discussed here on F-150 Online, it seemed that it was either a grounding or partial grounding issue, rather than moisture.
