Detonation Problem W/Superchip
I just wanted to know why my truck still has a detonation problem with the superchip installed. I had it sent back to superchips about a month ago and had them back off the timing a hair and it only helped some. If someone can relate please let me know. I'm getting really frustrated. ......and yes i'm running Mobile and also tried Citgo 93 octane and it doesn't do it with the chip out. Help!!!!!!! Thanx

How many tanks of 93 have you run through it,Mine took two or three tankfuls
to stop. I was in a 5000ft. elevation whenI
bought my chip.(90 octane was the highest available) Once I got down to the
low altitude where I live,it took a few tanks
to get rid of it. After that it was fine, good luck,,,,,98

Thanx for the tips guys. I've run quite a few tankfulls of fuel through the ole ford with no such luck of reducing the detonation. I've also tried some octane booster with no positive results. Of course, the detonation occurs most under strain, like going up a bridge....Not too many hills round here
I'll be sure to give S/C's a call this week to try and resolve the problem. Also,I've considered having the ECU re-programed in my Accord, but I fear the same thing may happen. Hopefully i'll get it straight.

Hi FASTX98,
It's most likely a fuel quality problem, where the octane rating is perhaps there, but the relative energy value (expressed in terms of # of BTU's per lb or gallon of gas) is too low, due to reformulations in your local fuel supply.
I see you also have some pretty large tires on there, and that can increase load on the motor quite a bit, which can also induce detonation, especially with some of the reformulated fuels. Detonation can be caused by spark advance versus octane, or it can be due to not enough energy content in the fuel supply, or a lean condition, in other words, detonation can happen for a number of reasons, and there are different types of detonation as well, it's not always just a straight issue of spark advance versus octane.
I would suggest giving us a call at our number below, and we'll be happy to go over all the details with you. I see you list that you're in Florida, I can tell you that getting detonation with the Superchip is a relatively rare occurance, and we very rarely find that happening in Florida, as that is where the Superchips US development facility is, so they're using the pump premium fuels there in the Orlando Florida area when they do the tuning on the chassis dyno.
It may well be that changes have been made recently to the fuel formulations in your area, and are consequently affecting this, or it may be something else, so this is why it's best to give us a call and let's go over all of this in detail.
If you haven't tried Texaco yet, you should, as that is a better fuel in most places than either of the brands you listed, though Citgo is usually a pretty good fuel in most places. Here in Virginia, we've had *excellent* results using Citgo, but that can certainly vary based on geographic location due to all the changes in fuel formulations that have been happening recently. You may find that Texaco makes no difference, and if that happens, that tells you that this is a fuel quality issue in your geographic area that is going to affect all brands, and that can be compensated for.
Just give us a call and we'll be happy to help you with this.
