Question How long before installing a chip in a new truck plus another question

Hi,

Expecting my new truck in on Oct 6 and will be installing a Superchip. I think I read here that you should not install the chip immediately so am asking how many miles until I do the install??

Also, I already have a K & N Air Filter waiting to be put into the truck. This is off topic for this thread and I apologize but I posted it elsewhere and got no response. What I am wondering is this, I am thinking about getting the K & N version of the Airaid-like kit and would like to know if it is difficult to install? I have very little experience in auto mechanics and would like any and all opinions on ease of installation and is the add on worth the price?

Thank you very much for you time,

hut

The K&N GenII is very eay to install, less than an hour, instructions are very detailed and good. You shouldn't have any problem. Good Luck. As for when to install the chip, I am sure Mike will be along to answer that question for you.

I installed my Superchip at the 500 mile point..just over two weeks into owning it. Not a single problem...I'm at 1,300 miles now (almost two months) and this is the smoothest running F-150 I've owned yet! K&N filter was in the same day I picked it up.

Realistically, I'm sure you can install the chip from day one...but the recommendation to wait is "just in case" there is a manufacturing defect/problem/adjustment needed...where the truck has to go in for service. By waiting, you get to see and feel how the truck is running...and allow the parts to break in somewhat before "tweaking" the power and tranny shifting. I have been careful not to drive the truck very hard (most of the time ) until I get a few more miles out of the way.

I did not decide to purchase a chip for my last F-150 until I had about 3,000 miles on it. The truck ran great with it...no problems.

Good idea on the chip installation. The K&N deal was a little difficult for me, due to the fact I'm not too mechanical or patient. I had a friend install mine and it took about one hour, but it would have been hard for me, so get some help if you can. I had the k&n prior to the chip and I liked it alot

Thumbs up

I too waited until I had 500miles on the engine to install the chip. With my truck, I ended up having to wait a couple of extra days to even pick it up because it had a bad starter solinoid. I guess it started fine when they put it on the train/hauler truck but then died when it got to the dealer. So I waited 500 miles to install the chip to make sure nothing else was gonna quit on it. I've now got close to 12k and it just keeps running stronger and stronger every day

Hi Hut,

Good questions!

With our vehicles here at Performance, we rarely wait until we even get off the dealer's lot before we install ours, but that's because of who we are, of course.

We generally suggest that you have a few hundreds miles on the new vehicle, just to make sure there are no immediate problems with your new vehicle that need attention first. 300-500 miles is plenty.

With regards to either the Airaid or the K&N brands of airbox elimination kits, they do work well and install pretty easily. We rate them as #2 on our informal best "bang-for-the-buck" list of modifications on these vehicles, second only to the Superchip in terms of actual power gained per dollar spent. You don't have to be a mechanic to do it, as long as you can follow directions and use a little bit of common sense, just about anyone can install it and be fine, it's not difficult.

Good luck with your new truck!

Hi Tina,

If you ever decide to do other mods, like open up the exhaust etc., we can always update your Powerstroke diesel Superchip to the next power level.....there I go, tempting fate once again.

Looking forward to next year's Rally!
