Post ANYONE KNOW WHAT THIS TROUBLE CODE IS?

HI!... Well guys the "FREAK" needs your help. For the last few months I have been getting a trouble code showing up in my digital odometer when I put it in diagnostic mode. The code that keeps showing up is "5284". My 1st thought was to disconnect the + battery terminal to see if it showed back up on restart. I hesitated because I did'nt want to have to make my SUPERCHIP re-learn all over again. There did'nt seem to be anything wrong with the truck at the time so I never gave it another thought. Well this weekend that changed. While sitting idling in a parking lot the truck almost stalled a few times and even now runs very rough at idle. It also seems down on power slightly. So today I cleaned my ATS (air tempurature sensor) and my MAS (mass air sensor) with windex and a "Q" tip. Nothing changed. Then I hooked up a voltage meter to my TPS (throttle position sensor) and it read 1.00. I had set it about a year ago to 0.98, but it seemed to be higher now. I reset it back to 0.98. Nothing changed. I then re-cleaned my K&N FILTER. Nothing changed. I then looked very thourghly through my engine compartment, looking for anything that was unhooked or just not right. I found nothing. This is driving me crazy. I just installed new factory spark plugs about 3 months ago, so I know it's not that. Anyone else have the same problem? How did you fix it? What is the 5284 trouble code? THANKS - NEAL

SORRY NEAL
I looked in my CHILTONS repair manual on these type trucks and there is not even a code in there close to what you said! but however the rough idle your truck is doing sounds like you may have a bad oxygen sensor? they realy make one idle rough and makes them sluggish feeling! and use a lot more gas than they suppose to! sorry i cant help you anymore! have you tried calling your local FORD dealer and asking the service man what the code meaned

Cool

HI!... F-TRUCKS : Thanks for the reply. I was also thinking that it might be a bad oxygen sensor. All the symptoms you describe are exactly what my truck is doing right now. A few months ago I tried some of that 104 octane boost, never again! It turned my spark plug electrodes all red and it ran like CRAP! Later I heard that those octain boosters can screw up your oxygen sensors. I'm going to call my dealer this week sometime and see if they now what the code means. My brother is a mechanic and he could'nt figure out what the code meant either!

According to the SAE standards this is not a valid code which could mean a computer problem. But, the third digit being a 2 says it a fuel system problem.

P0284 Cylinder 8 Contribution/Balance Fault

This is as close as I can find and I believe thats a fuel injector problem on number 8. But my Ford codes don't even list injector codes.

HI!... BILL : Thanks for the response. I went to the dealer today and their computer tech looked in their FORD code book and could'nt find any codes anywhere even close to the one that I am getting. He also told me that if any of the main sensors on the engine were to malfunction, that the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT would come on. I'm not getting any light! Today at JMC's house with my truck in neutral, my truck kept surging up to 900-1000 RPM. When I put it in gear it wants to take off at that RPM! This is driving me crazy! I'm going to make an appointment with the dealer in the next few days to see if we can get to the bottom of this!LOL!

the 2 in the third position means fuel system problem. the 8 in the second means cylinder 8.

that is unless your computer is making stuff up... :-)

Thanks Bill for that Website intel.

Now, with all these neat sites being put out, AOL is giving me fits with OBD codes that apparently relate to them thinking that I have totally overloaded my "Favorites" domain.

And......their Service Department is no more helpful than the one at my Ford dealership!!

HI!... Well guys, "GOOD NEWS, GOOD NEWS"! Yesterday I decided to try and fix my exhaust leak. The flange that meets my header collecter was leaking slightly. After trying to unbolt it and try a new position, the re-bolt it up, it would still leak slightly. I got fed up with it so I took a flat punch and a hammer and slowly worked my way around the exhaust pipe flange, closing up the 1/16TH or less gap that was creating my exhaust leak. It worked great, and now I don't have ONE bit of a leak. But that's not the good news! Tonight when I got home I decided to check my DIAGNOSTIC MODE on my digital odometer, and guess what? The "DTC" (detecting trouble code) mode is now reading "NONE". I think what was happening was that the MAF sensor was telling the computer what amount of air was entering the engine, and the 02 sensor, because of the exhaust leak was disageeing with it. They were basicly disagreeing with each other. Now my truck seems to be running correctly and the idle does'nt seem to be surging anymore. We'll see if it stays like that now. I'd thought I'd just let you guys know what seemed to work for me.

Hey Neal!

Congratulations on finding the problem!

From our discussion, that makes perfect sense, I'm glad you were able to get this solved, that it was "just" an air leak.
