5.8/v8
1995 f-150 with a 5.8 v-8 130,000. I would like to put on a super chip. I have changed the diff. from a 3.55 to a 4.10 and put 33x12x15 tires. My speedo is off by about 5 miles. I can live with that, but what info is need for my set-up and can you do this?

Hi beeno1,
I'm glad to see you did the gear change to compensate for those taller tires, good for you! This is something that is not done a lot of tiems, and performance suffers as a result, so we're happy to see you;ve done the gear change.
130,000 miles may be a lot, or you may be OK installing the Superchip, it really depends on just how healthy that motor is. If it's a worn-out oil-user, then it's probably not a good candidate, for example. But as long as it's running normally, getting good gas mileage (for it's size, of course), and not using an abnormally large amount of oil, then you'll generally be OK. Not knowing anything about the vehicle other than it's mileage, 130,000 miles, I just wanted to point that out, as it's not a good idea to start hot-rodding a tired old motor. You of course know it's condition far better than we do, as it's your vehicle of course.
With regards to recalibrating your speedometer, that is very easily done, and you don't do this in the chip, that isn't the way to do it on your model year. In all 1998 & older F-150's, you simply replace the reduction gear in the transmission to restore speedo & odo accuracy, so any speedo shop can easily do this for you. Or, if you know which gear you need, you can just buy the appropriate gear over the Ford parts counter for under $20.
I suggest that we talk a bit about your vehicle, so we can go over all of this in greater detail with you, so just give us a call at our number listed below, we're open 10 am to 7 pm, Eastern time, Monday thru Friday, and we'll be happy to help you with this. We'll need to get your computer code from your vehicle, as each Superchip is programmed according to the exact software revision that your individual truck was shipped with from the factory. The computer in the 1996 & older F-trucks is in the driver's kick panel, behind the aluminum mounting plate for the emergency brake pedal, and it can be removed either thru the cabin or thru the firewall.
To find your vehicle's computer code in the 1996 & earlier F-trucks, open your driver's door, and look in the front part of the door frame, in the general area of the door hinges. There is supposed to be a sticker there with 3 letters and 1 number on it, and that is your computer code. And by the way, we aren't talking about the sticker on the back of the driver's door that says "calibration" on it, that isn't the code we need, just so you'll know. Sometimes those stickers are gone, and if so, just give us a shout and we'll go over the other places to locate your code, etc.

Mike, Thanks for the reply. As far as the transmission spped gear change, I have a ED04 electronic Transmission, is this still done with the gear chage to correct the speedo and the odo? For the Superchip, I am mostly interested in performance when I am towing my 5th wheel trailer. On any incline, I really dog it up the grades. My engine does have alot of mileage (130,000) but it is in excellent condition and does not burn any oil at all. My mileage averages 11.5 in town and 12 on highway(without towing) on the highway in towing I get 6.5mpg. The trailer is a 27ft 5th. wheel and it is 6800lbs. So with this info, and the age of my truck, would the Superchip help in getting up the hills when in tow and of course around town driving. I am too old for wanting it just for spinning tires.
Hi Beebo1,
Yep, it's still a reduction gear.
I also responded to this in your email as well.
Based on your description of the health of this engine, you should be OK to use the Superchip. You say it's running well and not using oil, and that's what we usually look at. We've had people install them routinely in vehicles with over 100,000 miles, and as long as the motor is healthy, there aren't any problems, generally speaking.
6800 lbs. is a good bit of weight to be towing, so I imagine it could use a little help!
