Post installing chip

I'm picking up my chip tonight but have a full tank of 87. Can I just add some octane booster to the tank and then install the chip or just wait till my next fill up with 93 octane?

Hi 1998 Nastruck,

That really isn't a good idea, and we do understand how anxious you are to get your new Superchip installed.

Most octane boosters are little more than ethyl alcohol, which is why most don't even list their ingredients anymore. However, even the few that do work (toluene & nitromethane are 2 ingredients that will raise octane) tend to require a higher concentration than they say, and can shorten the life of your spark plugs & even your O2 sensors with some of them. And yes, they all say "won't harm sensors, etc.", but we've seen the results.

Pep Boys use to carry a brand called "Berrymans", I think it was, that was kinda-sorta OK, but I still don't advise using an octane booster in a fuel-injected computer controlled vehicle.

In all honesty, I know you may not want to hear this, but our advice is to run that tank down until the fuel light comes on, and then fill up with the required premium gas. Doing anything else is a crap-shoot, and is not advised. It might work out just fine, and then again, it may well not. If you have to wait a week to install it to run out that fuel, that is what I would do.

Another point is that you should wait until the fuel light comes on at least (still have 3-6 gallons in the tank at that point), or even longer, to put premium in the tank; you don't want to run it down to say, half-full and then top it off with premium, as that dilutes the incoming premium quite a bit.

Best of luck, whatever you decide.
