How can I tell if I have a chip already?
Hey Mike, or anybody,
As I get closer to purchasing my chip, I got to thinking. What if it already has one? My truck seems to have an unusual amount of power and MPG for a 302 4x4. What is the easiest way to find out? I bought the truck used

Hi Primetime,
Easy, just remove your driver's kick panel, and you'll see see the computer there in all 1996 & earlier F-150's. Look on the back of the computer, and see if it has something attached on the back of it, like a small module, which would stick out of the back of the computer, and be a different color.
Good luck!

Last night I did as you suggested and this is what I found. There were two smaller 1 1/2" wide plugs(one grey, one black) going into a larger 3" wide grey connecter/adaptor, which went directly into the bright blue box(computer). I assume this was all stock?

HI Primetime,
The computer is not a "bright blue box". It will look kinda like galvanized aluminum in terms of it's color and basic appearance, it's not going to be blue. You may be looking at your ABS computer instead.
Also, the computer's wiring harness is not multi-part, it is a single harness with a single 10mm bolt head dead-center. This wiring harness will be under the hood, down low on the driver's side underneath the brake master cylinder, as the computer is mounted so that the first inch or so of it actually protrudes thru an opening in the firewall, so it can connect to it's wiring harness, which looks like it just dead-ends into the firewall, but it's actually connecting to the front of the computer there. The rest of the computer is behind the driver's kick panel, and also behind the aluminum mounting plate for the emergency brake pedal in the 1996 & earlier F-150. You can't see the computer from under the hood until you disconnect it's wiring harness. The best way to see if it has a chip already is to pop off the drivers kick panel and look at the back of the computer from there, to see if it has a chip installed, which I doubt.
Are you sure you removed the "drivers" kick panel, and not the passenger's kick panel?
Good luck!
