buddy's truck
My friend at work has a 97 v8(5.4L i think) XLT f-150. The chip came with the truck but didn't come installed. He has asked many people where the computer is, and has got different answers. Apparently he hasn't even found it yet. Does anyone know where it is? I figured, I have received answers to pretty much all my questions i ask on this board, which I thank everyone.

The conector is behind the battery hold down tray on the fire wall, 2 bolts hold the conector to the computer then go in on the passenger kick panel(by your feet when your siting in the seat)pull off the clip and the computer should come right out.

Hi Split,
The other responses are correct, so I'll just add to them a little bit....
The computer is mounted to the right of the dash assembly, and above the passenger's kick panel, so you do not need to remove that kick panel. To get an idea of exactly where it is placed vertically inside the cabin, you can simply open the hood, and look right behind the battery at the computer's wiring harness, which is right behind the battery, and has a single 10mm bolt head dead-center. The computer is inside the cabin, but the first inch or so protrudes thru the opening in the firewall just behind the battery. It looks like the wiring harness just dead-ends into the firewall, but it's actually connected to the front of the computer itself, which you can't see until you disconnect the harness.
The steps to remove the computer are:
1.) Disconnect the battery.
2.) Loosen the 10mm bolt in the wiring harness until the harness detaches.
3.) Go into teh cabin on the passenger side, and you will see that the computer (a 6"x9" "box") is held to it's mounting bracket with a black pressure clip. Simply pull this clip off, and that allows you to remove the computer!
Good luck!
