Tech1,

Mike T says that you should chip after the intital 1K break-in period to determine if there is anything wrong with the vehicle.

I installed a Superchip in my 2000 at the 500 mile point. I am at 850 miles now and no problems at all...smoothest running F-150 I have owned yet (98,00,00). You should be just fine to go ahead and chip it.

The last F-150 I owned (2000), I installed the Superchip around the 3,000 mile point. I finally decided to get one after reading all of the positive remarks on this site. It also ran flawlessly...so again..I would say you are just fine at your current mileage.

Cool

I put mine in at 1000 miles; no problems. Best mod for the money/results/effort. I noticed the transmission improvement immediately. Good luck.

Hi Tech1,

We generally advise that you have a few hundred miles on a brand new vehicle before installing any performance parts, just so you know there are no serious immediate problems with the vehicle that need attention. That being said, here at Performance we rarely even get off the dealer's lot with our new vehicles before installing them, but that's because of who we are, of couse.

It sounds like you're on the right track, as the top 3 bang-for-the-buck mods on these F-150's are:

1.) Optimize the pwoer train programming with the Superchip. 28 hp & 46 lbs./ft. torque on the 99 & later 5.4

2.) Reduce restriction on the intake side using an airbox elimination kit, either the Airaid brand or K&N's FIPK kit, they both add 14 hp to the 5.4 motor.

3.) Reduce restriction on the exhaust side, using a good cat-back exhaust system, about 12 hp to perhaps as much as 14 hp on the 5.4 motor.

You can do these mods in any order you like, and it won't affect the eventual outcome, these 3 areas work very well together.
Of course there are other mods, like headers, underdrive pullys, etc., that are just a tad lower on the unofficial "bang-for-the-buck" list, so you can go as fast as you want to spend, basically.

Best of luck with your truck,
