Has anyone tride using an aftermarket MAF AND a Superchip? I have hear that you should not do this. Is this true, and if so which mod would be more benefical to me?

Hi csacom,

As far as which of those 2 is going to give more benefit, by far it's the Superchip. Installing a larger mass airflow meter really doesn't add much in the way of power until the engine itself has been modified to the point that it is capable of outstripping the actual flow capacity of the stock components. We've seen ads and other claims of certain larger MAF's claiming to add as much as 17 hp to the 5.4 F-150, but we've never seen anything like that in testing on the Superchips dyno from those components on these vehicles in the "real world". There are a few exceptions, like the 4.6 DOHC Mustang Cobra from 1996 & newer, which has a MAF that is a bit too small for the rpm range that the DOHC motor is capable of operating at (7500+ rpm), so in that vehicle's case a larger MAF can pick up some power, but it's still no contest between the 2 which adds more power, it's the Superchip.

On your 4.6 F-150, the Superchip adds 26 horsepower and 40 lbs./ft. of torque. It also fixes all the sloppy shift characteristics, delays, and transitional spark retards that Ford uses in their automatic transmission programming as well, and that too helps performance, in addition to the raw power gain itself.

The Superchip generally works with aftermarket MAF's, and for the past year or so now, we have needed to adjust the program to compensate for them less often than in year past. It used to be that we always had to do a custom program to compensate for them, but as more time goes by, we find this is needed less and less. We generally advise to go ahead and install the MAF, an see if you pick up any driveability isues, or stumbling during warm-up, etc. And if you don't get any symptoms, then we don't need to adjust the Superchip program usually.

Either way, the Superchip will work just fine with the MAF, worst case we may need to do an adjustment to the program if you pick up some driveability issues, that's all.

If you'd like to go over this in more detail, please feel free to give us a shout, our contact info is just below.

Best of luck with your truck,

Cool

Mike, I would value your opinion of a MAF consideration for my truck. I am installing a new "bullet proof" transmission next week and will continue my quest for more HP and Torque!

Hi Flats Man,

Since you have installed a supercharger along with your many other mods, I think that would be an excellent candidate for a larger MAF unit, sure!

It will need to be properly calibrated for your fuel injector size, which the MAF manufacturers are doing a better job of nowadays by and large. You may well be able to bolt it right on an not need any adjustments to your program, something that in years past couldn't be done without a custom program.

We generally advise to go ahead and install the unit, and see if you pickup any driveability or warm-up issues, such as stumbling when cold, or detonation at higher rpm. If no symptoms emerge, then no changes are generally needed, as a loose & rough general "rule".

Give us a shout if you want to discuss this in detail,

Thanks Mike, The truck is in a good speed shop now having a Lentech terminator tranny with 24 to 2600 stall billet convertor installed. We are thinking about an 80 mm Pro M and I will do another fuel/air run to see where we set on mixture. Again, thanks. I value your input into my truck. It doesn't seem that long ago that I was ordering my first mod, the Superchip!

Hi Flats,

You're right, it wasn't very long ago that you ordered your first mod! You've sure come a long way quickly in that vehicle, you're making a lot of people around here drool.

Give us a shout as soon as you have that data, and we'll get it dialed in for you, if need be, no sweat!
