Unhappy FedEx- it's worth the money.

My chip is "somewhere" in Tulsa right now, but nobody at UPS knows exactly where!

Friday, the UPS-guy came by to deliver my chip, but I wasn't home, so he left the obligatory yellow note saying he'd return Monday. Knowing I wouldn't be home then either, I called the main office and arranged to pick up the pkg at the local depot. They said fine, Monday 8am-7pm. At 10:30 this morning, I go to pick up the chip. After writing my name and address down for the counter clerk, he brings me some box for Carlodas Osborn at some PO box in Tulsa. I tell him that that pkg isn't mine (Neal Osburn) and he says "yes it is". Again, I tell him that it isn't and point to the name/address I wrote down. He suprisingly claims that "there must be two people named Osborn" (even though my name is Osburn). DUH!!

So, he again returns to the warehouse and after a while come back and tells me that I don't have a box there. He says the delivery driver must have taken it anyway and would probably deliver it today. So, I leave empty handed thinking about how well UPS relays information- NOT!

On my way back to work, I stop by my house to leave the UPS delivery guy a note for him to get my neighbors signature. Just as I'm getting back into my truck... YIPPEE... the UPS guy pulls up. He tells me that he got a "hold order" for my pkg and that it was at the depot and I needed to go pick it up! Huh??? I told him that I had just came from there and they told me that HE had the pkg.

"NOPE", he says, "I left it by the this morning. Another driver must have picked it up by mistake."

He tells me to leave my note on the door in case the "other driver" came by to deliver the pkg.

Now it's 6pm and there's still no chip. So, UPS headquarters gets a call. They show the pkg to be at the depot. I go over the day's events and they tell me that they will have the local office call. About 45 minutes later, a lady from the local office calls and I tell her the story. She says that the driver must not have given the pkg to a clerk or just left it on "the belt". I tell her about the "pole" and she says "Oh!, I'll try to find it and we'll have it for you in the morning."

Guess I'll try again tomorrow. BTW, did I mention that UPS sucks?

Mike T. did a terrific job of getting the chip out the same day I ordered it. I'm in no way bashing him or Superchips. It's just $%@!*$#! UPS... This isn't my first problem with them, but it will be my last!

Thanks for letting me rant. I feel better now.

Neal

What a nightmare/comedy of errors! the good news is the chip will be worth it.

I always have stuff shipped to me at my office. UPS can usually handle this, but shipments are always delayed at least a day (sometimes 3 or 4 days) as whatever place I'm ordering from verifies that it is OK to ship to other than the credit card billing address.

Actually, I think it's a local UPS thing. A while back, I bought some nerf bars from JC Whitney. They arrived (via UPS) in a timely manner, but were damaged. It took dozens of phone calls and FIVE weeks before UPS finally picked up the box. They are always nice and apologetic, but it cost JCW sale- I found some locally while waiting for UPS.

Maybe I should bribe the delivery guy?

Since we are on the UPS subject, thought I would put my $0.02 worth in. I ordered my Superchip and FIPK last Monday. The Superchip came in as expected via UPS. Well the FIPK took 8 days. Both were shipped on the same day (different states). I don't understand how anything can take over a week to get delivered in the U.S. when UPS has planes flying back and forth and trucks all over the place.

Anyway, Mike, love the Superchip. Works like a champ!! When I get the FIPK installed I am taking her to the track down in Baytown to see what she will do. Just gotta do it!

Hi nomo,

I'm very sorry to hear you're having a problem!

However, this happens sometimes when the customer calls UPS and tells them to do something different from what we instructed them to do, we've seen that happen before.

And FedEx isn't any better, or we'd be using them instead, we've seen even more problems with FedEx compared to UPS. We have tried just about every commercial carrier from UPS to FedEx to Airborne Express to you-name-it, and we always come back to UPS because of their overall superior service in comparison.

It didn't used to be like that; for a number of years, FedEx did a better job, they were much more expensive than UPS and it showed in their service, how many packages got damaged (almost none back then!), etc. Years ago, it paid to use them, but not any more, that hasn't been the case for at least 5-8 years.

Please let us know if we can help,

Hi nomo!

So you figure it's a local thing, eh? Entirely possible, that's the way it usually is.

Do I take it from the smiley faces in your last post that it has finally arrived, I hope?

Hi 99BigAl,

Good to see you again!

UPS delivery times for their Ground service vary quite a bit. The further it has to travel, the longer it takes, that is the nature of Ground service, always has been, always will be. For example, if we ship something in-state, it gets there in 1 day, but if we ship it out to the West Coast, it will take 5-6 business days. This is assuming nothing happens along the way, and that no mistakes are made, which is usually the case the vast majority of the time. But as with any carrier, we've seen shipments that should have taken 3 days get lost and take 2 weeks to find their way to their destination, though thankfully this is very rare.

The founder of Federal Express had a great idea in college, to have one central national hub and to deliver everything overnight. That made a big splash for a few years, and then everyone starting delivering Overnight, and FedEx no longer held any advantage in delivery times. As the years went by, FedEx learned that they could not surive by Overnight deliveries alone anymore, they had to start doing the cheaper shipments too, and started offering 2 day and 3 day delivery services and other options, more along the lines of all the options that every other carrier offers.

It's always something........

Good to hear from you again Al, have fun at Baytown!

Mike,

Working in the distribution field, I have also learned that more than 50% of the time air freight companies ship via truck. Again, companies trying to lower their cost for the service. You may have already known that, but others may not. :-)

Yes, they got it correct yesterday. Picked it up at the depot and installed it when I got home.

Chip works great! Thanks.

Man I could right a book about how bad UPS is... If you ever have something delivered that must be signed for Fed Ex is the ONLY way to go. UPS doesnt have a clue where your package is and doesnt care. They make thier money from the businesses they charge a monthly fee to stop everyday and make pickups. They make absolutely NO accomodation for working individuals sending packages to home addresses.

In North Dallas you better take the day off and stay home all day if you are expecting a signature package UPS. My experiences are almost exactly the same as Nomo. HOWEVER if your signature package is coming Fed ex and you arent home they leave a door hanger with the time and address where you can pick it up the same night. NO horsesh1t about how it is still on the truck. The hanger says before 8pm at this adress and you go there and it is there and the coumter people treat you like a customer. I WILL PAY DOUBLE for Fed EX.

Having said all that I have packages sent to my office most of the time now. The mail room guys all know me and they let me root around to find something if I know it is coming...

Never had a problem with UPS until today. After waiting for my reflashed chip to arrive I decide to check tracking after it didn't show. Imagine the look on my face when I read Delivery attempted, not at home.
I was watching qualifying for the Brickyard at the time they said they "tried" to delivery. No little yellow note on door either. Called UPS and explained problem. Local office calls an hour later and says "We treid to delivery but you weren't home." I told them in no uncertainterms yes I was home and they better figure where they tried to delivery it. They call back again after about 7:00 pm after the driver get in and give me the same line. So I asked Was anotice left?" Answer, "Yes". "Well guess what you didn't leave it at my house." "well the driver says......" " I don't really care what he says, but unless you want to replace the package for me don't put back on a truck just tell me where I can come and pick it up at." After some hemming and hawing around they said they would do that. I have had countless packages shipped to me but never had anything like happen before.
