Jumpers
Hi Ted,
No, you do not need to worry about changing anything. Those jumpers only control the communications state of the edge connector on the back of the computer, and they were *supposed* to have been connected from the factory.
That circuit is only in use when the chip is attached, and when you remove it, that circuit lies dormant. It's an external override data path, only in use when engaged by connecting something to the male edge connector.
If you don't mind me asking, have you done careful & accurate mileage checks before & after your Superchip? I ask this simply because even with gas prices going higher and higher, that is when the Superchip usually makes the most sense financially for most people, as the cost delta between regular and premium generally does not change much, if at all. So in terms of a percentage, the cost delta between regular and premium gets smaller and smaller as overall gas prices go higher. This gives the Superchip an even better chance of offsetting the cost delta between regular and premium with improved gas mileage. Most people with V-8 F-150's see about 1.5 to 2.0 more mpg, from their reports here on F-150 Online. It usually won't make up for all of it of course, but the Superchip can usually make up for about 12-15 cents a gallon of difference in cost, so for most people, their additional fuel costs, if any, are maybe $2-$4 bucks a week. Again, not for everyone of course, but for most people this is the case.
Now of course if you drive a lot of miles, or if in your area the cost delta between regular and premum is higher than average, your costs may be more.
I ask this simply because sometimes people will look only at the cost difference between regular and premium, and think that they are actually spending that much more for gas, when they do not do gas mileage calculations with and without the Superchip, that's all. If you've already done all that,
then of course you know your numbers.
At any rate, we're sorry to hear you're pulling it. If you do happen to track your mileage once you return to regular and run without the Superchip, that might be very interesting to see if it goes down, as it almost always does.
Best of luck Ted,

Thanks for the quick response Mike.
Having read ur article, I think I'll just put it back in when this tank of 87 octane is depleted. Besides, I didnt want to really take it out anyway. Really notice the difference in torque and shift firmness when the chip is not in.
Thanks for the advice.

Due to the rising cost of gas, I have removed my superchip, boohoohoo! Initially I had the no start problem when I got the chip and had to have some jumper soldered on my computer. Now that the chip is out, do i need to remove the jumpers? Do they affect anything not having the chip in there?

Hi Ted,
Thanks for your response.
What would really tell the tale here would be to do the mileage checks with and without, so you can actually see what it's costing you.
I know how you feel, nobody really wants to take their Superchip out. And most people are just too darn busy in their lives to take the time to track mileage and figure out what they're really paying, we're all only human, and time is precious these days.
Best of luck, whatever you decide!
