superchip
I just got a 98 F-150 sc with the 4.2 and 5speed. I was wondering if a chip made a great deal of difference as to preformance and gas mileage. Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ROTAX
Rotax,
First off, I'm still not chipped, but will be soon. Second, I had the same type of questions as you. I sent an email to Mike(Superchips Distributor) and he told me that I would see 25hp and 31 lbs./ft. of torque on the 4.2. I think Mike would be more than happy to answer anymore questions that you have.

ROTAX, I have the exact same truck as you and a Superchip. I would not drive it without the chip. The chip performs as advertised.

Rotax: I've the 5speed 4.6 and I too wondered about the bennies w/a chip. And really if it was worth putting one on. Most people feel the added shift improvements but because we do our own shifting, that isn't effected. What I do feel is more HP and torque. This beast has much better response to the gas pedel. I take mine out on the beach a lot and it seems to have a lot more power to move in sand than it did. Gas milage wasn't much of a factor, these trucks are gas eaters anyway. But I do see an improvement in milage when I manage to keep my foot out of the gas
When driving on highways, I've noticed I'm able to pass cars while going uphill!! A big improvement there. All in all, for the relatively small price for all the bennies I got from the chip, it was well worth it.

Mike,
I have a 93 Splash 4x4 with the 4.0l and 5 spd. Do you have any horsepower and torque numbers for this vehicle?
Also, where do I find the code for my computer?
Sadly, before doing anything other than the K&N, I'll have to fix an expensive leaking slave cylinder.
But, a chip is one thing I'm considering along with a cat-back exhaust.
Thanks,
Steve

Dear ROTAX,
The exact gains on the 4.2 V-6 are 25 hp and 31 lbs./ft. of torque. most of our customers are getting better gas mileage too, but this is merely a by-product of the optimized spark advance curves used on part-throttle, so your results will depend on how you operate the vehicle, just like before. Most of our V-6 owners report 2-3 more mpg, while the V-8 F-150's report anywhere from 1.5 to 3.5 more mpg. As you can see, there is some variance there, just like the stock gas mileage varies, depending on how the vehicle is operated.
There are a number of V-6 F-150 owners here using the Superchip, so as you can see, it's a great place to get feedback directly from those who are using the product.
Welcome to F150online, and we hope you'll stick around!

Dear Steve,
Yes, it's 17 hp and 25lbs./ft. of torque on the 4.0's. A few of them will gain a little bit more, but that's the exact number for most of them. Your computer code will be on a sticker on top of the computer itself. The 93's usually have the computer in the passenger kick panel. A few 93's and other years prior to '97 had them in oddball places, like up under the dash near the center, but look first in the passenger kick panel for the computer. The computer code is usually 3 letters and a number, but on older Fords can also sometimes be a 2 letters and a number, or a letter, number, then another letter. 3 or 4 characters, total. It's easier to recognize than it may sound, as the code will be printed in bold capitals. If the sticker on top of the computer looks confusing to you, just write down everything as it appears, and I can usually figure it out.
Give us a shout for further details,

Hi Coolsville,
The power gains are the same for either the manual or the automatic transmission models.
The manuals simply do not have an automatic for us to firm up the shift characteristics on, or do all of the improvements to other autom tranny functions that we do.
Luckily, the manuals also do not lose as much power to driveline losses, losing only about half what the automatics do. (65 hp versus 30-35 hp)
Please feel free to give us a call if you'd like to go over the specific details of your application, we're happy to help.

HI Keller8191,
If you mean the 5.8 motor in the F-150, they can pick up anywhere from 18 to as much as 25 hp, and 34-45 lbs./ft. of torque.
You might want to shoot me an email with the exact specs of your vehicle, and then I can give you the exact numbers for that motor in your year, make, & model, ok?

Coolsville,
Check out the Superchips site at superchips.com. They have dyno results for the 4.6. You might want to check with Mike T. to see if your model year had any changes. So many people were asking, I think your question got missed in the shuffle...
