Lightbulb

Thanks all for your advice! I'm currently working on this problem for a couple directions but I'm in need of a scanner. I located one at my local AutoZone for $149 (OUCH!). I tried Pep Boys with no luck, Advance Auto Parts wanted to sell me this $199 scan tool, plus I'd need a cartridge for another $99 which had to special order.

The clerk (and I use that term lightly) at Forrest City auto parts insisted that no such puppy exists yet. And the guy at Napa insisted he had one for $43 that works. Yeah right! He told me even though it is only for EEC-IV that it will still "pull codes". No thanks! It looks like I'm stuck with $150 or bust. Any leads?

HI Y2K Offroad,

It was nice talking with you again.

You are running into the same things I found, though I have to confess that I have not recently shopped for OBD-II code scanners. But what I found when I checked this out some time back was the same things you are finding, that the OBD-II scanners for 1996 & newer Fords are considerably more expensive!! While you can find EEC-IV scanners for as cheap as less than $25, the EEC-V units are a lot more.

Let us know if someone comes up with a cheaper workable unit, by all means!

Thumbs down

Well I broke down and went out and got one of those Sunpro unit. I think I'm walking a little funny know as I shelled out $150 for something I'm not going to use much! With that aside there were no codes present, which surprised me quite a bit. I was expecting to be notified of a too lean condition, or cylinder misfire. Nothing... Makes me wonder if something ain't up with the PCM.

I did find 2 DTCs using the digital dash diagnostic trick. I'll post them after eating. (Which makes me wonder if the scanner is working).

Thoughts, ideas, help?? Tnx.

Ok, the 2 dtc codes exactly as they appear on the odometer:

d147
5284

Anyone know what they mean?

Angry

Okay, according to the mustang world site the meaning of those codes is as follows:

d147: SCP Invalid or missing data for vehicle security

What the hell does that mean??

5284: Oil Pressure Switch Failure

HUH???

I would assume that those codes get reset each time the battery is disconnected. But I would also have to think that something as serious as an Oil Pressure Switch Failure would show up as a code, thus the scan tool would grab it.

Arrrgh!!! This just keeps getting more confusing!

Unhappy

Ok, now I'm completely stumped. I just went outside and looked at everything again.

As I said, I'm getting dtc5284: Oil Pressure Switch Failure, yet my Oil Pressure Guage is working fine.

However, looping though the guage options on, I noticed "OIL000", a reading of 0 for oil pressure, keeping in mind the engine WAS running. Again according to Mustang World the OIL option means:

OIL:
"Displays the code (0-250) for the oil pressure switch input to the HEC. Oil pressure gauge will indicate present oil pressure. Normal oil pressure (greater than 6psi) will display a value between 000 and 176. A low oil pressure or an inoperative engine oil pressure switch (less than 6 psi) will display a value greater than 176. "

If it's not working, then how is the Oil pressure guage working? Someone care to take a look at their own truck and tell me if you're showing the same thing? Thanks!

I'm starting to think my PCM got PO'd at me during my SuperChip install...

Question

Y2K--

What's the "digital diagnostic trick" again? I remember seeing it a few days ago, but darn if I can find it now...

As a matter of fact, I looked at mine last night and got the same 000 reading for oil. Based upon the above post, I think that 000 is the best value, since something over 176 was bad.
