2 Questions about Superchips
How come my truck's manual says to only use regular gas and if you use premium the engine may start to knock. So how can you use premium with a Superchip?
I can't find my computer code anywhere. The only thing I found was a sticker under the glove compartment box with a code reading "F150 PN96 MAN A/C". Is PN96 the rigt code?

Hey Ford Rules All,
The Superchip requires premium gas, because it increases spark in it's program. Thus, more hp and torque.
As for your computer code. It should be located on the passenger side. Once you open the door, look in between the hinges. There should be a code. It should have 3 letters followed by a number.... mine is CPE2. The code is also located on the computer itself. If you look under the glove box against the truck wall, you'll see a silver box (computer), the code will be on it.
Hope this helps.... Mike Troyer will be along soon to give you a better understanding.
Best of luck!

Dear Ford Rules All,
Very good question, and it's been a good while since it's come up here, so I'm glad you asked.
The factory programming is set up specifically for the use of regular gasoline, in octanes ranging from 85-87. In some Ford vehicles, using premium gas with the factory programming can cause poor throttle response, worse performance and gas mileage, and other driveability issues.
In computer controlled vehicles, the fuel curves are specifically tuned for the burn rate of the gasoline you use, and as you go up in octane, the burn rate can slow down, which needs to be properly conpensated for in the computer's program. Because the factory program is tuned specifically for regular, it cannot take advantage of premium gas, and can in fact run worse when you use premium gas with the factory program!
With the Superchip, the program is specifically made for the use of premium gasoline, and that is where most of the raw engine power gain comes from. So it is perfectly safe to use the Superchip with premium gasoline, because that is what it was designed for.
With the factory program, you generally should not use premium gasoline in these F-150's, that is very true. Just like when you install the Superchip, you must use premium gasoline. In each case, you use the fuel that the program was designed for, to get the best possible performance from the engine.
To locate your computer code, simply open your passenger door. Look in the front part of the door frame, in the general area of the door hinges. There will be a sticker with 3 letters and a number on it, and that is your computer code! What you listed is not your computer code.
If for some reason that sticker is missing, just give us a call and I'll go over a couple other places you can look to find it. Don't worry, we'll help you locate it!

Thank you very much.
You answered all my questions. I finally found my computer code and I'm going to get the chip when I get the money.

Generally, no. What I mean is, just having the Superchip Flip Chip instead of the regular single-program Superchip will not automatically make any difference in power level. If you have us limit the power in one program deliberately, then there would be a difference, but otherwise no.
The only operational difference between the regular single-program Superchip and the Superchip Flip Chip is the fact that the Flip Chip can store 2 completely different programs. So you should have a specific need or reason to have 2 different programs, in order to justify the additional cost of the Flip Chip in my personal opinion. Some people have been having us configure the Flip Chip with one program for regular gas, and the other program for premium, like in the regular single-program Superchip, for example. There is no significant increase in engine power when we program them for regular gas, but in the automatics they will still accelerate a bit quicker due to the improved transmission tuning, and the removal of transitional spark retards during and after the upshifts that reduce engine power. And of course the top speed limiter is still removed as well.
The Superchip FLip Chip is nothing new, it's been around for many years, and has typically been used by drag racers for example, who want one program for the street, and then another program to use with nitrous oxide. The Flip Chip can store any combination of 2 programs. Some people have had us set it up with one program with a very low top speed limiter on one side, to use like a "valet mode", it's uses are limited only by your imagination.
If you didn't find your computer code where I described it in my last post, or if you'd like to go over all of this in detail, please feel free to shoot us an email, or give us a call, our contact info is listed just below in my signature line.

Also Mike, is there a basic chip for the 5.4L, or is every chip custom made?

Dear WLF,
The Superchip Flip Chip has a 2-position switch attached to a 2-3 foot long lead, and you simply flip the switch to change programs.
However, it is not an instant change unless you disconnect the battery, as part of the program is stored in volatile memory, and has to be overwritten by driving it for some miles before you feel the effects of the program change. Usually within about 50 miles or so you'll start to feel the change, though some things like shift points can happen right away.
Feel free to give us a call if you'd like to go over this in detail, so you'll have all relevant information to consider.

MGD1: every chip is custom made for YOUR computer. Each Ford truck has a computer code that you usually find in the passenger door jamb. Something like ABC2 Some trucks will have the exact same computer code and only with those trucks can a chip from one be switched to the other. That's why sometimes you can pick up a great deal here when someone sells their truck and then sells their chip too. But you have to match those codes or it just wont work!!!
Dear MGD1,
As Tina very kindly mentioned above in her response, each Superchip is programmed according to your individual vehicle's software revision loaded into it's computer. When you place your order, we ask for your computer code, which is very easy to locate. Simply open your passenger door, and look in the front part of the door frame, in the general area of the door hinges. There will be a sticker there with 3 letters and a number on it, and that is your vehicle's computer code.
This is just one of the reasons why the Superchip works so well, as there are no "generic" Superchip programs compromised to run on say, all 1999 5.4 F-150 automatics, for example. For the exact same year, make, options, etc. *identical* vehicle, there can be dozens of different software revisions used by the automaker, and we make a different program for each one. You see, different functions, such as fuel curves, top speed limiters, upshift points, and everything else, can be located in completely different memory addresses from one software revision to the next, which is why "generic" chips do not work very well. Superchips Inc.'s R&D load is increased tremendously by doing things this way, but this is what is required to get the kind of results that Superchips are known for.
Also, a vehicle can have a different software revision for reasons of mechanical configuration, such as whether it's an automatic or a manual, a different rear gear ratio as this affects upshift & downshift points, and numerous other reasons.
The same basic result is gained in each '99 & up F-150 5.4 (1997 & 1998 5.4's make less power stock, and can sometimes gain about 2 horsepower less than their '99 & newer counterparts with the Superchip), or in each 4.6 or 4.2, because the camshaft and intake profiles do not change during the course of the same model year, so we can program to get the same end result for each engine.
What you get with the Superchip is a program that was designed specifically for *your* vehicle's configuration as it came from the factory. The "standard" Superchip for each computer code will also work very well with most of the more popular bolt-on mods, such as K&N air filters, airbox elimination kits, cat-back exhaust systems, etc.
Should you decide to do major mechanical modifications to the engine, we can make a custom program to compensate for those types of changes as well, things like superchargers, nitrous oxide, camshaft changes, ported cylinder heads, you name it. Even if you make major changes a year or two after you install the Superchip, it can always be updated for a small custom programming fee due to it's "flash" design, thus protecting your investment in your Superchip.

Tina & Mike, Thanks for the info. I new about the code on the door frame from reading all the post's. Now I have a much better understanding why each chip is custom made for each truck or car. I just got a build date for my truck, for the week of 5/15, from the VOPC. Should have it by the first week in June.
Mike, after I get, I will be in contact with you and give you the code number and we can talk about the chip I need.
Thanks Again guys!
