Chip Question
Which chip is better, JET or Superchip? Is there a chip that doesn't remove your rev limiter? On the Superchip website, a 5.4L gets 27 extra hp, is that flywheel or rearwheel?
Dear Black N Tan Lariat,
Thre are several threads you can read here in this Computer Chips section with posts from people who first used the JET unit, and then switched to the Superchip. One of them is titled "JET=JUNK", or something like that, and there are a couple others as well. Not one of them ever preferred the JET product, JET has traditionally been one of the lesser products in this industry.
Plainly stated, the Superchip will run circles around any JET product. The little bit that the JET unit does, it only does at WOT (wide-open throttle), the rest of the time it lays there doing nothing. Also, all JET products are "generic", meaning they are compromised to work on all similar vehicles.
The Superchip is programmed for each specific vehicle, according to the exact software revision that was actually loaded into it's computer, so you get the benefit of a complete workup for *your* specific truck.
The Superchip works *all* the time, and does far more for your vehicle.
The Superchip power gain on the 5.4 F-150 for 1999 & later is 28 horsepower, and 46 lbs./ft. of torque. The earlier 97 & 98 5.4 F-150's will gain anywhere between 26 & 28 hp., and anywhere from 42-46 lbs.ft/ of torque, as they make a bit less power stock, but are also tuned just a bit more conservatively as well, so they gain very close to the same amount of power as the 260 hp 99 & up 5.4's.
To answer your question about "is there a chip that does not remove the rev limiter", the Superchip will not remove your rev limiter. That is something you *never* want to do. However, the Superchip will remove the top speed limiter, unless you request us to *not* remove it. The top speed limiter, and the rev limiters, are two completely different and separate functions, just so you know. It's common for people to think that it's the rev limiter that controls the vehicle's speed, but that is not the case. The top speed limiter controls only the top speed, whereas the rev limiter controls the maximum rpm the engine can attain in any gear.
Please feel free to give us a call if you'd like to go over all the details, our number is just below for your convenience.
Good luck with your truck,

Dear Blank N Tan Lariat,
We're the National Distributor, and not the manufacturer, so I don't have their database, only our own, sorry. Most people just order it from us due to our F150online discounts & no sales tax, and our customer service & support. It's so easy to install that over 98% install it themselves.
If you'd like to go over any of the details, or would just like to ask questions without any pressure to buy, please feel free to give us a call, and we'll be happy to go over anything you'd like.
I also noticed that I overlooked one of your questions regarding how the horsepower is rated. Those are flywheel figures. For a number of years, it was very common in the aftermarket to quote real-wheel numbers, but over the past 5 years or so the public at large has been asking for a number they could relate to in terms of their stock ratings. So it's now commonly expressed in terms of flywheel figures by most manufacturers these days, and Superchips does the same, quoting the flywheel figures.
Just to give you an idea of how much of a loss you see in the drivetrain, the 97 & newer V-8 automatic F-150's generally lose about 60-65 horsepower from the flywheel to the rear wheels.

While I'm Not sure where the closest Dealer to you is I will let you know that you can work directly with the manufacturer. I live in Orlando Fl and have delt with superchips before. They can get all the needed info from you over the phone and take the order. As far is installation is concerned all you need to do is remove your passenger side Kick panel (I think, last time i did this was on a Honda Civic). The Super chips staff has always given me great service and fully answered all the questions I have had. In fact, Im getting ready to chip my 4.2 (seems pointless at times) Good luck

Black N Tan Lariat,
I am the one who started the thread"JET=JUNK" because I am speaking from experience. I owned a JET chip then changed to a Superchips Chip. I cant even begin to tell you the difference.I think you should read my thread JET=JUNK (if you didnt already) so you know what my experience was.I am not trying to influence your purchase decision but I feel like I can help you make an informed, educated decision before you spend your money.

28 hp at the flywheel is pretty good, but Jet quotes 16-18 drivewheel horse power, which is real good. How much does a superchip cost(approximately)? I'd rather buy from a dealer instead from the 'net, due to the fact I can return it if I am not satisfied or it doesnt work.

I was also concerned that I would not be satisfied with a Superchip..but since I installed one about 5 weeks ago...I am more than impressed!!! NO CHIP will turn our massive trucks into race cars..but what the Superchip does is very nice and WELL worth the price! I get evil looks from my wife now if I hit the gas too hard.
The extra torque is very nice.
A new Superchip is around $235-265 and if you can find a used one..the price has usually been around $150. Check out the classifieds on here. I bought mine used and it works as advertised!

Mike T,
I noticed you mentioned 60 to 65 hp loss at the drive wheel for an f150 automatic. About two months ago, either the feb or march issue of Peterson's 4 wheel and off road (I think) did a dyno test for adding a chip, filter kit, and exhaust. They got 241 peak at the rear wheel on a 5.4 auto and after the mods got 267 hp peak. Thats a loss of only 19 hp at the drive wheel. Does that seem reasonable to you, seems mighty small to me. Even us manual tranny owners don't expect that small of a loss.
Thanks for any input.

Black n Tan Lariat,
I can't comment on the Jet chip, but I installed a Superchip I bought from Mike Troyer last week and I have to say it makes a world of difference. I primarilly wanted to fix the lazy shifting, but the hp increase to my 4.6 is definitely noticable. I wish I did it sooner. My wife even likes it (good thing since she drives it most of the time).
As far as where you buy a Superchip, the classifieds here are an option where they are typically $150. I considered that for the savings of about $80, but if there is something wrong then what do you do? The Superchip has a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser so I felt more comfortable with that. I actually ordered mine from Mike over the phone, got the f150 online discount, and had it in my hands two days later. If you buy it from Mike you won't be disapointed with his service. You won't be disapointed with the chip either.

I just replaced my jetchip with a superchip. There is a difference but not a huge difference. SInce I have only had the chip in for five days the jury is not in yet, I am waiting to take the truck out with the camper. All things being equal,ie price, I would go with the superchip. However, If you want a bargain and it will fit, you can buy my jetchip for $50! <GRIN>

Can I send a money order or use a COD to pay for a Superchip if I order it from here? I dont wanna buy used, only new. I probably buy it when gas prices go down too, since it already costs about $36 dollars a week in gas, and thats the cheap stuff.
Dear Whyknyt,
I haven't seen that test, but no, a 19 hp. total drivetrain loss cannot be correct for this vehicle, either for a manual or an automatic, as you correctly pointed out!
One thing that could affect this is that the pre-1999 5.4 F-150 was rated at 235 hp SAE Net at the flywheel, while the 1999 & later 5.4 F-150's are rated at 260 hp. SAE Net at the flywheel, thanks to improved cylinder heads primarily. Perhaps they used a pre-1999 unit for those tests, I have no idea.
Driveline losses for the 5.4 automatic run 60-65 hp, as I previously stated. The F-150 5.4 cannot be had with a manual, but based on other manual-transmission tests, you can usually expect to see about half that amount of loss on a manual 4.6 F-150, for example. The 5.4 Lightning, with it's 4R100 automatic, sees driveline losses of 65-70 hp, or about 5 hp more than for the smaller automatics that the non-Lightning F-150's get.
