mike, i only want shift improvements that
come with the superchip, dont care about having to use premium gas. what happens if i have chip and only use regular gas?

You *cannot* use regular gas with the Superchip. Or, perhaps I should more accurately say that you *shouldn't* run the Superchip on anything less than premium gas, because that is what it specifically tunes the engine for.
Now as far as what will actually happen, that varies widely. Roughly about half of the 97-99 F-150's will not exhibit audible detonation on regular 87 octane with the Superchip, you just don't get the rated power gains. The other half will tend to detonate (ping) with anything less than premium gas in the tank. There is literally that much difference in the effective adjustment range of the knock sensor systems in these vehicles. The 2000 model-year F-150's have shown more tolerance for this, and so far we have not heard of any pinging on regular from the very few people who have done this, but again, I want to emphasize that this is *not* something you should do. The product is designed for premium gas, and not only are the spark advance curves set accordingly, but so are the fuel curves, to compensate for the different burn rate of higher octane gasoline.
However, there is a solution you might want to give some thought to, and a number of guys here recently have done this. We can configure the Superchip Flip Chip for you with one program for regular gas, along with all our other normal mods to transmission function, remnoval of the transitional spark retards, etc., and then with the other program set for premium gasoline like the normal single-program Superchip would be. This gives you maximum flexibility, as well as maximum power regardless of what gasoline you burn.
Please feel free to give us a call and we'll be happy to go over all your options with you. You can then give it some thought, take your time and decide what will work best for your situation, after you have all the facts & info.
