HI Steve!
I enjoyed talking with you again today. As we spoke about, during the first 500-1000 miles, the WOT upshifts will tend to get a bit firmer as you accumulate more miles, that's just the relearn cycle completing.
We recently did some informal gas mileage testing on a 99 Ranger (my wife's, actually), and found that it can take as long as 2000 miles to achieve the best gas mileage results from the Superchip in that particular vehicle, and that probably holds true for most other Fords as well. It may be due to the relearn cycle completing, and Ford's "adaptive strategy" taking over, which is where the ECU attempts to optimize itself for the manner in which the vehicle is being operated. For example, in the first few hundred miles thw power gain was of course noticeable, and got a bit better as we accumulated more miles. Mileage stock was 15.9 - 16.0. (This Ranger is very heavy, over 4000 lbs., 4.0 5-speed with 4.10's front & rear) Mileage during the first 1000 miles went up to 17.5, which was less of an improvement that we had seen on all our other 4.0's, of which we've had a number of them in the 90's in various vehicles, usually Explorers. As the next 1000 miles was accumulated, mileage continued to slowly rise, until it hit a peak of 19.1, where it has stayed ever since, consistenly. So while power and some mileage improvements happen virtually immediately, it can take a couple thousand miles to get thru all of this, and get the absolute best gas mileage from the Superchip.
Enjoy,
