ruger-dfw,
Here's a post from another thread that explains the difference between the Flip Chip and the regular superchip. In my situation, I felt it was a better deal overall to get the flip chip, and now that gas prices are soaring, I'm very glad I did! The flip chip contains two separate distinct programs. Mine has 87 octane program in position 1 and the 92 octane program in position 2. This response was directed toward a question about octane ratings and the effect they had on engine knock, but I think it will help you as well!
"Ironically, I didn't experience any knocking while running 87 octane in position 2! I asked Mike about it, because I thought the chip was defective (no knock when I fully expected it!) and he said the 99 and newer models have more variance on the knock sensor, so basically the knock sensor on my truck is capable to detuning the advance tuning of the superchip to prevent engine knock! He didn't recommend running it in position 2 with 87 octane, because you won't see any of the advantages of that position without running 92+ octane!
I do notice my truck is peppier in position 1 with 87 octane that before the chip install! Remember, even though the chip's fuel curve and spark advance are tuned for 87 octane in this position, you are still feeling the effects of the transmission shift point improvements, firmness increases, the removal of the spark retard and shift delay between 1st and 2nd, and also the removal of the speed limiter! So, there are still a lot of improvements over stock, even though your are only useing 87 octane! Now, add a tank of 92 or higher octane fuel, and all these variables seem to improve again with the new added HP the engine produces! They are connected! Good example, in position 1 it takes a concerted effort on my part to break the rear tires loose (of course I have 275/60-17's, the 3.55 LS, and am currently carrying 300 lbs of rocks over the rear axle!). But with a tank of 92 octane and running position 2, I have to watch how I take off (espacially around a corner) or I end up attracting a lot of attention to my truck! It will easily spin the tires!"
I hope this answers your question! If not, Mike can give you the technical if's, and's and but's to the whole flip chip configuration! He knows his stuff, and I don't think there's a person out there more dedicated to this board and his customers, and he's a joy to work with!
(Honest, he doesn't pay me to say these things!
)

Dear ruger-DFW,
Just so you'll know, we do not discuss product pricing here on the message boards, that is not allowed by the Webmaster of F150online because that is considered blatant commercial content, and we support this policy of course.
We know you need this info, so we suggest that you please contact us privately for pricing information, we'll be happy to get you that information so you'll know the cost of both types of Superchips, then you can think about which might suit your individual needs better. We do not offer the Flip Chip on our online ordering system here on F150online because Flip Chips are always custom programs on at least one side of the chip, so we have to get that specific detailed info from each customer, and we use a custom worksheet for that purpose.
The Flip Chip is a considerably more expensive product, it's list price is 70% higher than the regular Superchip, just to give you a quick rough idea. It can store any 2 programs, and allows you to control which program you are running on by flipping the attached switch. So it's 2 completely different chips, and 2 completely different programs inside the Flip Chip, and that is why it is a more expensive product. And because it is more expensive, and won't get you any more power gain than the standard single-program Superchip, we suggest that unless you have a specific purpose for the Flip Chip, like PaulT's situation above, to not spend that additional money. Now some people feel it is worthwhile and will have us configure them with one program to be used with regular 87 octane gasoline, and the other program with our regular performance program for premium gasoline. That works extremely well, and is worth the additional cost for some people, like Paul T above pointed out. Others use the Flip Chip for drag racing for example, having one program for the street, and the other program for the drag strip to use with say, nitrous oxide. The point being, the Flip Chip is applicable if you have a specific need for 2 separate programs. And if you do have a need for that, then it's an excellent product and well worth the additional cost, because any custom programming fees are *included* in the cost of the Flip Chip. These custom programming fees are *not* included in the regular single-program Superchip, so for those who need any kind of custom programming, the Flip Chip is the best way to go simply because you get more for your money in most cases.
I know this can all seem a bit confusing, it's a lot of information to take in, so please feel free to give us a shout at your convenience, our email & phone contact info are listed below in our signature line. We'll be happy to go over all your options, pricing, your needs, etc., so you can make this decision from a well-informed standpoint.
Good luck with your truck!
