Post Computer Troubles w- Short Gears???

Question for all. Is anyone with short gears 4.10 4.30 4.56 etc. having any problems with the computer? The OBD equipped mustangs were having problems with anything numerically higher than 3.73 and an automatic. I am considering swapping in a 4.30 as I like the look of the large tires, but don't want to sacrifice too much bottom end.
thanks in advance

Dear TJohnston,

It's somewhat common when making a substantial change in rear gear ratio to need to have the automatic transmission upshift points adjusted in the program to compensate; this tends to happen moreso on the 1999 & later vehicles, but some of the 1998 & earlier vehicles can be affected. When the rear gears are changed, you then get a conflict with the VSS signal data being reported not matching within a certain range, and once you get outside that range, you have to have the shift points adjusted. You can also sometimes find that this will affect the top speed limiter as well, reducing it even further when you go up numerically in gear ratios.

Please feel free to give us a call, and we'll be happy to go over than with you.

Good luck with your truck,

Cool

HI!... TJOHNSTON : I installed 4.10 gears in my truck after I got my SUPERCHIP. The problem I was having was during the 1st to 2nd upshift. The revs were coming up so fast in 1st gear that the tranny did'nt have enough time to shift into 2nd gear and I was hitting the rev limiter every time I raced in the 1/4. I told MIKE T. about it and he helped me out big time. I sent my chip back to SUPERCHIPS and they wrote me a custom program for my application. They raised the rev limiter in first gear to 5800rpm and made the 2nd gear upshift, shift 100rpm sooner than before. This solved my problem and the truck shifts great now. Listen to MIKE T. he knows what he's talking about and will help you out if you have any problems.

Thanks for the replies. I believe that I am going to go w-4.30, if I have any problems with the shifting then I will buy a superchip, (let me rephrase this... I am going to buy a superchip anyway, I just want my combo to be the way I want it first and relay that info to Mike T when I buy it) I also have to change the trans fluid and filter soon so it will give me a reason to put the truck on the lift again. Fortunately I am able to do my own gear swap so it won't be that bad... I have a 4.10 out of one of my old stangs and a friend that wants to swap a 4.30 for it... We shall see either 4.10 or 4.30 either way it will be better with the big tires then the original 3.08 or the 3.73 in there now.

Dear TJohnston,

Ahh, since you can do the work yourself it's much cheaper, quicker & easier for you to do a gear change than it is for most of us, good for you! Being able to do the labor yourself makes all the difference in the cost of some of these mods, like gear changes, headers, etc.
