99 XLT, Regular Cab 4X4, 4.2V6, 5 speed, 17 inch wheels and tires with Sport Package and 3.55 axle. Only 500 miles on it and so far averaging 14.5mpg on 2 tanks of 89 octane. Put a K&N filter on it today and will be putting a Dynomax Race Magnum muffler on soon. Hopefully, it will get better. Driving is 50/50 city highway.

Post What's your gas mileage?

We've had some discussions lately about the variances in gas mileage that F150online participants have been reporting. As we all know, there are many factors that affect gas mileage, so I thought it would be nice if we could have a thread where we can have people post their mileage results, and we could accumulate this kind of data so owners of these vehicles will have a better idea of they are getting the kind of results they should be getting for their exact vehicle configuration, location, and type of fuel, etc.

What would be a great help would be if anyone who posts their mileage would be so kind as to tell us the configuration of their vehicle. Is it a 4X2, or a 4X4? Is it a 4.2V-6, a 4.6 or a 5.4 V-8? Super Cab? Long bed? And if you've had it weighed, say, at the drag strip or at a scrap metal recycler, even better if we can get that data too!

Also, what state was your vehicle *originally* sold in, so we'll know what emissions package it has from the factory, as we are trying to determine if California-spec vehicles are still getting worse gas milege, like they always used to in the 70's and the 80's?

And last, what brand and octane of gasoline are you using?

Thanks in advance to everyone for any data you may care to share with your fellow F150online participants!

I get 14-15 around town and about 17 on the highway. I have gotten as high as 19 on the highway. The milage will vary according to my heavy foot. Total average is 15.6 after 7k miles.

Mike,
We have had this discussion before, if you are concerned about getting great milage, don't buy a truck! Although I must admit I do keep an eye on mine just to see how driving habits effect milage. Recently on a road trip from Vegas to Big Bear, Ca I drove very concervatively and had my best milage ever at 17.2 mpg. On the flip side, I also went from Vegas to Zion Nat'l Park, UT, and drove at 85+ the whole way and got 11.8 mpg. Around town I tend to get between 12-14 mph depending on how many chevy's I run into that week! Any other's out there with a 4.9? Would like to hear what your results are!

The worst MPG I've measured was 16. That was on the first tank and about 70% city driving. The highest I've ever measured was 21.3 MPG. This was with about 80% highway, 65 to 75 MPH and many hills and traffic. This is with all the mods listed below except for the Superchip. My driving since I put in the Superchip has not been typical (I've been having fun with it) so I can't say what it's done for MPG yet.

Up until Superchip, I'd say I average between 18-20 MPG with my 80% highway driving. I've never had a chance to measure 100% highway mileage. The few times we took a long trip, we got stuck in bad traffic and that killed any good MPG I could have measured.

I remember seeing (somewhere) a weight of 3880 lbs. I have (not by choice) CA emissions and usually use Mobil or 76 gas (87 octane before Superchip, 93 after).

Dear 94F150,

Yeah, it's funny, most everyone knows not to buy these trucks for their gas mileage, yet gas mileage is still a concern to most owners. That's why I wanted everyone to have this thread so we could all accumulate this data, and more people would have a chance to compare their truck's configuration with similar vehicles, and all the other factors, etc.

Thanks for your post and your data, too! A lot of other 4.9 owners who hang out here will enjoy reading your signature line and all the mods you've done to your 4.9 I-6.

Have fun,

Dear Danny,

Those are *excellent* numbers! I see you have 3.08's and a 5-speed, so between your configuration and your mods, it looks like you're getting excellent results!

Thanks for your data,

Consider yourselves lucky! My little beast (the stang) get 6-8 mpg thanks to a Edlebrock carb that runs very rich! Unfortunately it only has a 12 gallon tank so I am at Texaco darn near every other day! That's just the price to pay and it's worth every red cent!!

I have been very **** with my mileage monitoring, so here's what I get:

CA emissions package on a '99 250 LD SC 4x2 w/ 5.4L, auto, 3.73 LS, & LT245/16's

Weight of truck = 5150 (with shell/cap and carpet kit).

Most driving is ~2/3 highway, with the occassional leadfoot (A/C usually on)

I just passed 10,000 miles yesterday, so the engine is hitting it's stride.

14.1 mpg without the shell,
14.3 with the shell,
K&N air filter and airbox mod made no difference in my mileage,
14.1 since going to Mobil 1
12.7 is my worst tank
17.0 is my best tank (ran it @ 80 mph for nearly 5 hrs straight, A/C on whole way)

I've been experiencing a bit of a rough idle problem -- was running Mobil 87, switched to Texaco 89 and it's better, but not gone.

I have a 99 5.4l supercab flareside 4x4. I have been feuling up at Hess with 93 octane and I bought the truck in NY. Since putting in the superchip my gas mileage is @ 12.5-13mpg around town and up to 16mpg on the highway. ( I'm a little hard on the gas around town because I love the power). The only mod so far is the gibson exhaust, a airraid to come soon. Hope this helps...

Same here. I have a 1998 F-150 4x4 with 5.4L and 3.55 gears. I get a dismal 12.5 to 13 MPG around town and about 16 MPG on the highway. I recently added a Gibson Swept Side exhaust and Airaid and have not noticed a difference in MPG.

I refuse to buy a "superchip" because I do not want to be stuck buying premium fuel. Instead, I bought a Banks TransCommand to firm up the shifts and eliminate slippage on my E40D transmission which I believe is one of the major advantages of a "superchip." According to a recent Car & Driver review of chips (Hypertech and Superchips), and I quote:

Certainly, we learned that these chips offer more performance gains on automatic-transmission-equipped cars. All automatics went considerably quicker with the chips. If we owned a manual-transmission car, we wouldn't pop for a chip unless we were hoping to lift a top-speed governor. Car & Driver Magazine October 1999.
That statement alone says it all. The chips ability to adjust shift points and transmission firmness is the major factor for their gains, IMHO.

I have tracked gas mileage from day one. In 1997 average was 18.386. In 1998 average was 17.597. In 1999 average has been 18.461. With over 29,000 miles overall average is 17.815 mpg. I drive pretty hard; like I am trying to get my money's worth out of that Superchips Mike sold me; and it works. Somehouw I am almost always out in front at the stop lights. My best road trip averaged 18.71 over almost 2000 miles.

I finally went out to the truck and grabed the paper I write all these figures down on: One thing you you need to know is, my speedometer is off and I don't know the % difference so these are the straight numbers without adjusting for the milage being wrong

w/Texaco 260.4 miles / 16.4 gals = 15.9mpg
w/Exxon 303.1 miles / 22.1 gals = 13.7mpg
w/GoGas 176.5 miles / 11.5 gals = 15.3mpg

I dont know what the real numbers are so I just added "1" to each mpg making Texaco about 17mpg. I ran a minumum of three tanks of each gas except for Exxon. It was so obviously crappy that I only ran two tanks. The GoGas is 92octane and really cheap so that's what I use most of the time. In a town near here, it's going for $.99 for premium!! You can check the sig. for spec on truck.

I've had my truck for two months, and have gone 6400 miles so far. My normal commute is the beltway around DC, so traffic sucks! I do take frequesnt trips to Georgia, and will be headed that way again this Friday. I check mpg every tankful and am averageing 16.5 mpg. My best tank was 18.3 on my way to Georgia during the last hurricane! Maybe there really is something to the water injection therory! On the return trip, in clear weather, I only averaged 17 mpg! I just installed a K&N filter to the stock air box last weekend, and I'm interested to see if I get better gas mileage this next trip. The last tank of gas (1st since K&N install) was 16.9, but then was noticing a little difference in performance, and was probably a little heavier on the gas than usual. I usually run 87 octane, but the last two tanks have been 89. I normally buy from the lowest priced station, which in my area is the WaWa or Sunoco. I am debating on which option to purchase next, the superchip or the gibson exhaust. Being as my factory exhaust is almost new, I'm leaning toward the chip, but the thought of having to run 93 octane (real expensive around here) is making me hesitant! I received an e-mail from JET stating I could run 89 octane with the JET chip. Any thought in this?
