Unhappy Need Help!!!!

Just received my superchip today and have followed instructions but when I put the chip in the truck it won't start. It turns over but that's it. The top contacts and bottom have been cleaned. The top are gold and the bottom ones are silver after cleaning. Don't know if I haven't cleaned enough but I also don't want to damage them either. Anybody know whats the problem?

Thanks in advance...

99XLT,

First of all, calm down. Don't be upset. I would contact Mike Troyer directly via telephone or email if you wish to wait a day or so.

I had the same problem last year but my particular problem was a "no start" computer.

It's long been rectified by now and I am having some fun with my Su[prChip. Since the explanation is detailed, Mike Troyer can explain it all to you directly.

Meanwhile, your truck still runs without the chip .......

Forgive me for asking this but did you clean the contacts of the chip as well as the computer? The computer had some serious goop on it that will prevent a good connection if you don't get it off.

Well folks I made a big mistake!!! By reading Superchips instructions which states to verify that both sides of the edge connector were cleaned thoroughly...well I guess i cleaned one side to thoroughly...I cleaned the top of the connector to the point of showing gold or copper. I feel that I didn't have to rub to hard for the silver coating to come off. The bottom has a much thicker silver coating which I didn't rub off.

Just a warning to everyone that is going to add a chip. MAKE SURE THAT YOU DON'T CLEAN THE CONNECTORS TO THE POINT OF THE SEEING COPPER!!! I wish this was stated in Superchips instructions...

I did call Mike today but no answer. But later he called me back (thanks to caller id) and told me the bad news about the cleaning job that I did. So I have to send my computer in to Superchips so they can re-coat the top connector. The bad thing is that I can't drive my baby for 2 days!!! when I send in the computer...

If it makes you feel better, I too went through the silver. It's not very hard to do.

I guess I was fortunate. I did not have to get recoated.

How does it work? Read the signature...
How do you make it?...Just like the article here, but http://208.243.19.238/tech/airbox.html

I added an aluminum bracket to hold the back section in place. I used the bottom of a 2 gallon paint bucket for the filter retaining ring the SD setup is different than the pics but I was able to do it easily.

Dear 99XLT,

It was nice talking with you Sunday and today.

Based on our discussions, I think what has happened is that you may have gone too far on the top contacts, but since I cannot see it, I really don't know for sure. It can also be that sometimes on the bottom side of the edge connector, where there is less room to work, people using the green Scotch-brite pad sometimes do not remove enough material from the contacts on the bottom of the edge connector. At this point, since I can't see it of put my hands on it, I can only surmise that contact damage is what may have happened. Over 98% of the time, when you get a no-start result with the Superchip, it's something related to the connection. It's most often due to the contacts not all being thoroughly cleaned of the conformal coating, but then there are other reasons, I.E., the jumper misconfiguration that has affected a few 98 Expeditions and some 99 Fords of various makes, and that can't be it, as your code has never been affected. Or, the computer may have been reflashed to a different code either before or after you bought it, etc.

The contacts will still function if some small amount of copper is showing, BUT, if there is any damage to the copper, then it won't start. Remember, we only want to remove the clear conformal coating, not any metal from the contacts *beneath* this coating.

Superchips will get to the bottom of it, don't worry!

Thanks spaceace. I am going to try that. Mike, I fedexed my chip and computer to Superchips tonight. I took your advice on sending it tonight to try to save some time on getting it back. Let's hope that they can fix it. Again thanks for excellent customer service. To everyone that is thinking of buying a chip...Get it from Mike!!! I never have experienced such great customer service in my life. He even called Superchips for me and had a RMA number ready. Again thanks Mike...
