JET Powertech module???

Hi Mike,

I've been reading your commentary on the Superchip, and it's been really helpful. It's the reason I've pretty much decided to go with the Superchip. My first choice was the JET Powertech performance module. I haven't seen anybody mention this product. Could tell me what the differences are, advantages/disadvantages, etc. between the Superchips and JET? Thanks in advance and keep up the great work!

Hi Ricky154,

You don't see much mention of anything other than the Superchip here primarily because the Superchip is the only product that works all the time, the rest only work when you are at wide-open throttle (WOT), so it's a much more thoroughly developed product, that makes much more power. JET's product is perhaps the worst of the bunch, because it doesn't actually reprogram anything. It's merely a data-intercept device, which captures incoming sensor data, and then alters the data thru voltage manipulation, to trick the computer into thinking it's colder outside than it really is, and it dumps in additional spark advance at WOT as a result. You can maybe get 7-9, maybe 10 horsepower on the 5.4 V-8 with that technique, and it's $295 MSRP, for a $20 handful of parts, and little true R&D.

The Superchip actually reprograms the ECU, calibrating it for best overall driveability and performance. It removes the top speed limiter on most vehicles, and completely recalibrates the shift characteristics of the electronically controlled automatic transmissions. The shift delays are removed, as are the spark retards in transitional areas for both manual and automatic vehicles. It basically makes your vehicle feel as if it had a bigger engine, and the automatics leap ahead nicely on the WOT 1-2 upshift, instead of laying down from the spark retard after the upshift before accelerating hard again.

Superchips invented this industry back in 1983, and is the only chipmaker to ever be hired directly by the automakers, including Ford, Rover, Porsche, Honda, Renault, etc., etc.

And by now, just about everyone here is ready to puke from reading this same sales spiel from me over and over, and I apologize!! Unfortunately, I just don't know how to better point out the basic differences between the respective companies products. It's the salesman in me, and the best thing a salesman can have is the best product of it's kind; in this field, it's the Superchip. It's easy to make more power at WOT; there are no emissions standards that have to be met during WOT operation, a little-known clause of the emissions regulations, so if that's all you change, you don't have to go to the expense and trouble of emissions compliance certification. It's another story to modify all parameters that can aid driveability, and that's the key; Superchips' number one priority is driveability, and making the overall driving experience more fun. And that takes come real R&D know-how, which is only available with the Superchip product.

I hope that gives you the info you're looking for. If you'd like to discuss any of this in further detail, feel free to give me a call.

Bests,

Don't think you're getting all the facts about the JET Power Module. It is NOT tuned for only W.O.T., but for ALL angles. The Module for my OBDII is NOT an in-line "signal tricker", but a REAL plug-in Module that plugs into the same computer port as the Superchip. I've noticed a major upgrade to the quality of the transmission shifting (at ALL throttle angles), good feeling torque (at ALL throttle angles) and very intense acceleration when I want to GO. The unit that plugs in-line between the computer and the wiring might be for the older style computers... or for the 300, 302, 351 and 460's. I'm very pleased with my JET POWERED F-150.

I'm glad you like your JET unit, truly I am. Car & Driver just finished testing the JET unit, along with the Superchip, Hypertech's unit, and a few others. The Superchip was the only product that showed actual power gains according to Car & Driver, (and no, Superchips doesn't advertise there, so there's none of that bias trying to please an advertiser) either on part-throttle, or full-throttle. The *only* one. This test was done on a Ford Contour, and will be printed in the next couple of months, or so we hear from the writer at Car & Driver.

In addition, we will be doing another shootout, comparing the Hypertech, the Superchip, and the JET unit on a late-model F-150. As soon as the dates have been confirmed, I'll let everyone know. In every single published chip shootout among the major chipmakers, Superchips has always won hands down. The reporters most common statement is always that the Superchip is the only one they can feel in the seat of their pants.

Nobody is trying to mislead anyone here, and I hope you continue to enjoy your purchase.

Have fun,

Thumbs up

Well, I'm not *that* happy with the JET Power Module NOW. Just blew past a 1996 1500 Chevrolet today like it was sitting still... till my truck went to sleep @ 95mph Damn speed-limiter is still there!!! Already E-mailed Superchips with my computer code. BTW, the Superchip is 35.00 cheaper!

MAN!! This is good stuff!
What a site!
Thanks for the little written shootout there, guys.

Hey, Nascar, what's a power pulley?
What's it do? Where does it install? Can a shade-tree mechanic like me install one? How much does it cost? Is it worth it? You know, some of the details. Thanks.

Rick.

The Pulleys are JET Underdrive Pulleys. Basically your getting bigger pulleys for your accessories and a smaller crank pulley. The JET Pulleys are right @ $300.00 for my 1998 4.6 F-150. Mine have been on about 2 weeks and I haven't run into any problems yet. Not really too hard to put on, but you do need the proper fan clutch wrench and (depending on application) you may need a puller for the crank pulley.
