You are not alone my friend. Code:AAT3, Result:Truck won't start. I was pretty sure that I had cleaned the contacts well but the truck still wouldn't start. How come I can't be this lucky (unlucky) when it comes to the lottery? Mike called me back in about 5 minutes after leaving a message and told me who to get in touch with. My question is has anyone gotten the soldering done locally at an electronics shop. I don't own a solder iron. HELP?
Thanks,
logan

Truck won't start

I got my chip last week, installed this weekend and my truck wouldn't start. I guess I'm one of the two dozen unlucky ones out of thousands who has one of those finicky computers. I'm sure Mike will respond in his usual way and get it fixed quickly. My computer code is CFK2.

I too had the "No start problem". I sent my computer to Superchip overnight and they sent it back overnight with no problems. Works great now and it made me feel good that they were taking care of it. An electronics shop may not know the computer like Superchip does.

Take it easy.

hey guys, I'd be willing to bet your terminals are not clean. I've installed two. On my 98 F-150 the terminals were coated with a wax-like substance, it had to be scraped off, truck has had no problems. I helped my son install the chip on his 94 cobra. The terminals were coated with grease that wiped off. We cleaned them with alcohol and installed the chip. He drove it fort about 30 minutes, everthing was fine. Next morning it wouldn't start. Pulled the chip off and it ran. Went back to the dealer and he scraped the terminals with a knife, re-installed the chip and everything worked fine. Just be careful and don't scrape too much. Good luck.

I'm sure I cleaned off the edge connector quite well. I pulled the computer out and sent it to the factory. We'll see what they say. Will the computer work the same without the chip after they solder the board?

Dear Cruzer,

Yes, the computer still works *exactly* the same without the Superchip, after Superchips connects the jumper(s) that will enable communications to the edge connector. That circuitry is only in use when there is a chip attached to the edge connector, otherwise it just lays there doing nothing. the edge connector is on the back of the Ford computer for one reason, to reprogram the computer.

After you get the computer back from Superchips, anytime you remove the Superchip, your computer will revert back to it's factory program immediately. Connecting to the edge connector acts like an on/off switch, so installing the Superchip tells the computer to turn off it's internal eprom, and to seek it's instructions externally. So it's just an external data path, basically, that has one purpose, to allow external software to be run.

Dear Johnny Bonds,

No, in this case what's happening is these guys have 1999 F-150's, and the mainboards in their Ford EEC-V computer came from a different supplier, who did not bother to connect the jumper(s) to enable communications to the edge connector, which is the part that has to be cleaned & lightly scraped in preparation for the Superchip installation.

It's a very easy fix, it's just a matter of connecting the jumper, and it's just a drop of solder to close the circuit. there isn't any way to predict which 1999 Fords will have this, it's an extremely small number. Due to the fact that we're on an F-150 specialty web site where chips are discussed by a lot of people, there are probably somewhere betwen 10-12 of the people who frequent the message boards here that have had this same board in their computers, and have either done the work themselves, or have taken Superchips up on their offer to do this and overnight the computer back to the customer, free of charge.

A notice about this comes in every new Ford Superchip, along with instructions on what to do.

My truck is running now. I took the board to a local electronics repair shop and got the guy to solder the jumpers together. He didn't even charge me. He told me he was a FORD man too and had been considering chipping his '88 F-150. Truck started like a champ and runs well. I haven't been on interstate or hwy since but I did notice a big difference when accelerating while changing lanes (which i do often). Thanks for you help Mike and thanks to Rob at SuperChips.

Hi Logan,

I'm so happy you were able to get it done locally so quickly. I told you, it's very simple!

Congratulations on being Superchipped!! It does wake that 4.2 V-6 right up, doesn't it?

Have fun with your new Superchip, and after you get used to the extra power, let us know what kind of mileage gains you get, if you track your fuel mileage that is.

Cheers,

That's funny that you ask if I track my fuel mileage. Reason: I do, but not normally I actually have a MS Access DB and a MS Visual Basic 5.0 front end that I use to track MPG, Oil Changes and any other work done to my vehicles. It earns me a better deal when it comes time to sell. My first 3 tanks were between 15.38 MPG and 15.68. I installed the chip right at the halfway mark on this tank so I will have to wait about 550 miles before I know. Thanks Again,
Logan

Hey Logan,

Sheesh, all that data, WOW! That must be one heck of a front end to track those vehicle expenses!! I'd love to see what you've done...how long did it take you to build that thing? I can see where it would be helpful come time to sell the vehicle, what a great idea, taking it to that level.

The best minds hang out at F150online! (I just come here to sponge off them!)

I run a MS Excel spreadsheet and have the information from the window sticker on one page, all the mods I have done on another page and then the gas mileage for 97, 98 and 99 on separate pageS. On the 99 page I go back and pick up the totals from the previous years and average out the vehicles total mileage.

Whenever I have put gas in this truck I have filled the tank. Makes it a little more accurate when computing mileage.

Oops; forgot one more page that includes all of the maintenance and work done such as oil changes, tire rotation, recalls and whenever I did a modification to the truck.

I find it really helpful to track everything because I like numbers. I like to know that my truck gets 15.68 MPG and just about 15-16. The VB app is not big, just one form that does show you MPG and CPM (Cost Per Mile) and allows you to add, edit, delete entries for fuel, oil change, or repairs. Right now all I have in it is 3 records for fuel. Only got 1512 Miles on truck. But you are right. The best minds do hang out on F150 Online.

I got my computer back from Superchips yesterday. It took two days there and back, as advertised. I put it in last night and my truck started right up. The chip works great, much better acceleration and quicker shifts.
Thanks to Mike, Superchips and F150 Online.
