Who would win this race???

I have been challenged to a race, Ford vs Ford and I want to get opinions on who would win.

The contestants:

Me: 1999 F150 4x4 4.6 with 5 speed, SC with 8ft box, 3.55 gears. Everything stock but the bug deflector, truck has 4000 miles)

Him: 1988 F150 4x4 302 with auto, RC with 8ft box, dont know the gears. (truck has 44,000 miles)

Lets say we are racing on a two lane paved road out in farm country, maybe 1/2 to 3/4 mile.

Would the 4.6 beat the 5.0?? Would I lose too much time shifting gears?

The competition is my uncle, so it would be a friendly race.

Who would win????

Dear Huckster,

You win, hands down. And if you don't, the Superchip will cure that!

Seriously, the 4.6 is a much more efficient engine design, he may be a little lighter than you with the standard cab, so who knows? My bet is that you win, but only if you can shift that 5-speed!

Good luck, and let us know what happens!

Huckster: I don't know how old you are but I'm guessing your uncle is older? I'd watch out, sometimes age and experience and the fact that he's got an automatic and a lighter truck than you, could seriously help your uncle to win this race.

I would say that you could "school" him! Just as mike said, the 4.6 is more effective and I'am sure probably has more horsepower. As long as you can SHIFT that good ole' 5 speed without too much spin off the line...you should have any problem. Besides, even if you loose, the chicks will dig your truck over the '88

Blake, still got danonthemind? sorry couldn't resist. i had a 91 f-150 302 xcab 6.5bed. if your uncle is crafty enough to power brake it off the line, you are going to be playing catch up most of the way with your 5speed.

I agree with Blake.....the chicks will dig the newer truck!! Isn't that all that matters? Tina?
As for the actual race, I think it will be very close, let us know what happens!

Huck,

For what my opinion is worth ........ I've had two "hands on" experiences with '91 - '94 F150s RCabs, both auto 4 x 4s and I must assume they were both at least 302 V-8s.

Both races were substantially over at 40 mph in my favor. It was no contest. If they were 351s, so much the better. Just don't miss a shift.

Huck,

Just go out there and have some fun!! but be safe!! Either way you both win just by virtue of drivin FORD's, As far as the actual race, well if you feather your clutch smartly and don't spin your tires you should be fine, miss a shift and your uncle will have braggin rights!! On the positive side the "babe's" will find your truck more appealin!! So its a win win situation for you. Your other option talk to Mike T bout a "superchip"!! Good luck and let us know the outcome.

Huckster..............been there and done that.......The 4.6 should win if you dont screw up on the take off. The 302 is lack luster on 2600 to 3500 rpm range. This is where the 4.6 gets crackin' PLEASE LET US KNOW THE RESULTS!!! He more than likely has 3.55s

Hey huck,
I've got a reg cab 4.6 with a 5 speed and a few mods and I love showing tail lights to the auto tranny guys. Take off smooth enough and by the time you power shift to 2nd you'll have him. When I had the stock 235 tires I had to control the wheel spin. the way I did this was to bump the throttle up to about 3,000 rpms and the wait to start the race, when the light changed let the clutch out slow and smooth and this should minimize wheel spin. You should practice this by yourself for a while before you race as it looks like you havn't had this truck long. Run up to 5,000rpms then if you shift fast enough don't let up on the gas and just bang second and you'll have him by a long way. It is a little rough on your driveline, but you should do ok if you don't do it alot. Also be careful of you shifter **** pulling off on your 1st to 2nd shift.
good luck,
Kapthowdy

Very interesting
In the Mustangs the 5.0 beats the pee out of the 2 valve 4.6 (or did until the new heads went on the 4.6 this year.) The F-150 4.6 doesn't get the new heads until NEXT year, but the consensus is the 4.6 is faster in the truck. We always knew Ford had stepped on the truck version of the 302 rather badly in the name of fuel economy or tractability or some such bs. Go run your race and tell us how you did. BTW the difference in weight for the Super Cab should work out to 0.1-0.2 in the 1/4.
