6.8L Chip vs Programmer
6.8L Chip vs Programmer
I am looking into getting a liitle more power out of my '02 6.8L. I've been looking at the Diablo Sport Chip and the Superchips Micro Tuner and I'm uncertain as to which one is the wiser choice. Any thoughts??? Which one of these will give me the most power while towing?
Hi krhaz,
Between those 2, the Superchips tuning will do the better job, and it's 50-state emissions approved by CARB & the EPA. The Superchips tuning also does a better job in terms of automatic transmission calibration, as well as things like removing the top speed limiter, etc.
If you want maximum power & performance gains, there is one other important option you need to know about, that will get you more power & performance than any other tuning option - and that is having us do a custom tune in the custom tune-capable version of Micro Tuner - not the 1715 "standard" Superchips Micro Tuner, but a completely different unit, one that is designed for us to do custom tuning in. The truck does not have to be modified, we can do this even for a bone-stock vehicle and make the best power & performance gains when we do the in-depth custom tuning for your specific truck, how you use it, etc. That is what will net the maximum safe & sustainable power and performance gains, and it will still allow you to have 3 different performance tunes available on tap, any time. For example, if you want to have one program that still allows 87 octane operation, with full towing capability AND still nets you a nice power & performance improvement, that is easily done.
This in-depth custom tuning can also be done in a single-program chip for those who want to keep costs to an absolute minimum, yet still have the benefit of an in-depth custom tune.
In general, comparing a "chip" to flashing the PCM with a hand-held device, either one will give you the ability to deliver a performance tune to the PCM - the chip just takes longer to install, involving about 30-40 minutes of work as compared to just 10 minutes with the hand-held unit - and of course, we offer both.
Most people prefer to use the Micro Tuner so they can simply flash the PCM without ever having to touch it, and then they also have multiple different programs for any level of octane or type of vehicle use, a built-in OBD-II code scanner, etc.
Usually, most people want multiple different tunes available so they can use any level of octane, having towing ability, etc., and also a program that allows for all-out performance on premium gas for when you're not towing, for example - in other words, a way to "have it all," so to speak, in one device - that is what most people do.
What I would suggest is taking a look on our web site over at www.TroyerPerformance.com (click on "Shop" once the home pages loads) and then read up on all of the various Superchips options for your truck.
And of course, please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below to discuss all of this in detail - we'll be happy to spend some time with you going over the specifics of each option, benefits, power gains, comparisons, etc., so you will have all the info you need to make a fully informed decision.
Best of luck whatever you decide,

Thanks Mike,
I really looks like the superChips setup is the best way to go. I looked at your site and I wasn't quite sure which programmer you were refering to (custom) other than the 1715. I have yet to do any intake or exhaust mods yet, with this being said will I still notice a measurable increase with the custom programmer?
Thanks for your help!
Keith

Hi Keith,
Oh, sorry about that! I am referring to the newer Superchips Custom Tuning Micro Tuner, which is our Part# 9100.
Yes, even on a bone-stock truck, you will still get noticeable power & performance gains.
Also, if you decide to do things later on, like an intake kit, a cat-back exhaust, underdrive pulleys, electric fans, a larger throttle body, and even shorty headers, that usually does not require any tuning changes to be made in these trucks.
But if you ever did do any more involved mods (like a blower, larger MAF or injectors, ported heads, etc.) later on, we can always update your custom tuning in that 9100 custom Micro Tuner.
