I just installed the 1715 micro tuner on my 5.4 supercrew
I had just filled the tank with 87 octane gas earlier that day. I have the 87 octane tuned in. I was told to run at least one tank of premium gas before switching to the performance tune. Could I use an octane booster to raise the octane? Thanks
Hi Havok3,
No - whatever you do, please DO NOT use any octane boosters at any time - well, the exception would be when your only other choice is walking.
Octane boosters by and large cause pink to purple-ish colored deposits on your spark plugs & O2 sensors, despite the claims on the bottles from the various manufacturers.
Just run that current tank of 87 octane down until the LOW FUEL light first comes on (at which point you still have 3.5-4.0 gallons left in the system, so you won't run out), and then fill it up with premium. *Then* you can go ahead and install either of the 2 different premium gas tunes in the 1715 Micro Tuner.
So just hang in there until you get that current tank of 87 octane run down - don't "top it off" with premium before you run it out, that just causes the existing 87 octane to dilute the incoming premium gas - so just wait until the low fuel light first comes on, then fill it up with premium, and then you can immediately reflash the PCM to the premium gas tuning.
Good luck & have fun,

Thanks for the advice. I'm at less than a 1/4 tank now, so later today I will be able to install the performance tune. It definately improved my screw's shifting. I can't wait to see how she does with the performance tune. I will be doing the performance tune without towing. Thanks and have a great day.
