what would this chip do
Hi Gil,
First - "is it worth it?" Well, in terms of "is it worth having a properly optimized powertrain program," absolutely - you bet, it's literally the single best performance enhancement you can make to these trucks (if it's done right), as nothing else will improve the performance and driveability as much for the same or less cost - nothing.
Yes, you have to use premium gas with the Hypertech performance chips and most others (though we can give you options there so you *can* still use 87 if you want).
Remember that with the Hypertech chip you also need to change the thermostat to an abnormally cold 160 degree unit - sometimes they don't tell you up front that is actually required, you sometimes learn about that only after installing that chip and not seeing any real gains - then you learn about having to use the abnormally cold thermostat along with their chip just to gt any real gains. Doing that will kill heater function in winter, and is *never* a good idea on any street-driven vehicle. Using any cold thermostat like that is really just a gimmick to trick the PCM into advancing the timing more - and doesn't even work most of the time in warmer weather, mostly it just compromises driveability.
Instead, what *should* be done which is to stick with the stock factory 192 degree thermostat and get those power gains via proper thorough tuning. Remember, your engine actually makes it's best power and gets it's best fuel mileage at a coolant temperature of about 200 degrees - that's why it uses a 192 degree t-stat.
Using our tuning will get you significantly better power gains and better driveability than the Hypertech tuning will - which is why most F-150 owners come to use for their tuning.
If you'll use the search feature here to just retrieve posts with this type of information for the 4.2 V6 F-150 specifically, you would instantly find more info than you could ever want about this - it's all been discussed right here, many, many times.
We can even provide you with a tune that will still allow you to use 87 octane on a 4.2 V6 and get some nice power gains as well - they have an inherent problem with being very weak below 2500 rpm from the factory, and we can take care of that in the tuning & still get you a nice gain at the wheels and still use 87 octane gas! But we can get you a 25 HP gain and over 30 lbs./ft. of torque on premium gas.
We can set you up with everything from a simple single-program chip to a multi-program chip, or even our multi-program custom Micro Tuner so you can just flash the PCM via the OBD-II port and not have to spend 30 minutes installing a chip - just 10 minutes to flash the PCM without ever having to even touch the computer! And have multiple programs - for 87 octane and for premium gas so you can use whatever you like with greater flexibility for both lowest gas cost and best performance, all in one package.
Give us a call at our number listed below & you'll quickly see what we can do for you and all the various options, etc., as there are many more options available to you for your 4.2 V6 that will actually do a better job - and spend some time just looking over just the past few pages on threads in this section, just look at the thread titles for posts about 4.2 V6 tuning we've done - you will quickly find there are 4.2 V6 owners *raving* about our tuning for these V6 F-150's.
Sorry to sound like a poster-child for sales, it's just that when you want the best tuning for these trucks, you come to us - by all mens, take your time, do your homework and read the actual results posted here by other 4.2 V6 F-150 owners like yourself who have had us tune their trucks via chips or flash devices - they love it, and you will, too.
Best of luck whatever you decide,
