FOU1+Chip= Jumper Wires

I'm looking to get a Superchip. I have a '98 F-150 S/C 4X4 4.6L w/4R70W and a 3.55L/S running on 33's. But have heard that with a FOU1 ECM code that I have to have some jumper wires soldered inside the ECM. Can someone disspell this myth, or is it actually true?

Hi Pittsburgh,

No, in your case that is not an issue - that 1998 FOU1 is not one of the PCM's that has ever been a "jumper box."

In the F-150, that can potentially affect a few of the 1999 model year trucks (which is a factory issue where they simply failed to enable the J3 connector and is easily fixed. But you won't be dealing with that with FOU1.

Please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below about your Superchip, as these FOU1's do have some characteristics that can make them a bit problematic for tuning unless the tuner has a good deal of experience with tuning that particular code - they have a tendency to detonate a bit even on the stock program on 87 octane - we can take care of that, of course. We have many different "standard" performance tunes for the FOU1 code, as well as doing scratch custom tuning (even on a bone-stock truck) to get the best power & performance gains.

The bottom line is the FOU1 won't be a jumper box, so you'll be fine in that regard.

Best of luck whatever you decide,

Yeah I know about the detonation. I've been using 89 octane and it has virtually eliminated the detonation( I'm guessing you're referring to pinging). Anycase, I've got to look into funds and I'll go from there.

Thanks for the reply Mike.

Hi P,

Yes, by "detonation" I am referring to the "pinging" - we're talking the same language.

So your truck has that problem too, eh? Well, glad to hear that 89 octane took care of it for you - many owners have to have the octane plug pulled (well, in most 1998 & newer trucks it's done in the VID block), which reduces power & that's never fun.

Good luck with your truck,
