chip questions

Hey guys,
I am interested in getting some feedback and advice. I have a new 03 supercrew with the 4.6 2003. I am going to start my performance mods soon. I will probabally get the package deal with Troyer for the Air Force 1 and the 1715 tuner first. Then I will want to add the cat back exhaust and possibly headers. Will I need to get a new tuner or chip if i add headers? Also would I be better off just saving and getting the package with the cat back magnaflow included?

Hi Matt,

Excellent questions...........

First - no, we do not need to change the tuning later on if you add shorty-style bolt-on headers (like the JBA's) and/or a cat-back exhaust system. Now we *can* change the tuning a bit for the headers, and get about 3-5 more HP, but that is not *required* with shorty style headers as the actual location of the upstream O2 sensor does not change in the JBA's.

This is something we've had to go back and re-examine and re-test a number of times - we used to automatically recommend that any time a set of headers was installed, regardless of type, we wanted to update the tuning - but over time & more testing, we've found that shorty headers where the O2 sensor location does not change do not require tuning change - so you'll be fine with the JBA's, for example.

Now with regard to "will you be better just saving and getting the bigger package" that includes the exhaust - that is strictly up to you. From a total purchase price standpoint, sure, you'll pay a little bit less overall the more you buy at one time - that's always been true, basic economics 101, so to speak. But in this case, when we're talking about the headers and/or cat-back exhaust either with or without the other stuff, it won't make much additional difference by doing all of that at once. I can't quote exact numbers here, the best thing to do would be to give us a call when you can and have us go over the exact numbers with you, so you can see the actual differences, and then make your decision based on that.

Here is the answer to what I think you're really trying to determine: Because you will *not* need to pay for additional custom tuning later on based on those mods (meaning, adding the headers and/or the cat-back exhaust system later on), you'll come out fine going ahead and ordering whatever you can comfortably afford now (or in the short-term), and then order the headers/exhaust later on as your budget allows - you won't have any additional custom tuning fees later on due to the headers and/or the cat-back exhaust system - and that's the real point here, avoiding a potential second tuning charge - so no, you don't have to worry about that with the modifications you're talking about.

I hope that info helps, & good luck!

Mike,
Thanks for the reply that does help a lot and answer my questions. I am going to start saving for the air force one with tuner option first then buy the exhaust and headers down the road. I need to know what my best option for a tuner is.
Should I just get a chip or get a tuner. Also with the different tuners is the performance and versatility of the 1715 better than a single program?
Thanks Again
Matt

Hi Matt,

The best thing to do is to just drop by our web site at www.TroyerPerformance.com and then click on "Shop" once the home page loads - then you'll see all the various sections, including the Superchips section - there in the FoMoCo vehicles sub-section is where you'll find all that info on the exact features of each product, the chips and the tuners - reading that will tell you everything you want to know.
