MIke T. Here's the report I promised you

I bought my 2002 Supercrew on November 1, 2003. I have kept good mpg records on it since then. Before I installed my Superchips is got anywhere from 14.8 to 16.3 mpg depending on terrain and my foot in the carborator ( just and old expression, now have EFI) I installed my chip at Performance Tow level and got much the same mpg. BUt I did have my foot in it more. The made me do it. But I did have some concerns about shifting too soon on hills out of OD on to the TC. You suggested to change the shift sellting two places above ST on the setting for the shift from 2-3. Did that and also changed to the Performance settings. What a diffference. Here's the results. First trip 800+ miles, 1/4 mountainous and city stop and go, 1/2 70+ mph, and 1/4 winding hilly. I got 18.3 on first part, 15.2 on next part and 16.5 on last part, all of which I had to travel comming back. Overall got 16.8 mph on entire trip. Next trip 1000+ over same type conditions. First 300 miles 19.4 mpg. Overall trip 17.6 mpg. Last trip 200 miles from 5000' elevation over Donner Summit 6800' to 2000' and back. Most over freeway at 65+mph and about 1/4 on windy mountanous road up and down hill. Overall averaged 19.4 mpg. Better shifting and less downshifting onto the TC. Much better setting for here, only now I have to change back to tow to tow my boat for the season. Oh well, Jon

Hi Jon,

Thanks for your report!

Those are some absolutely *EXCELLENT* mpg numbers you got there, fantastic results!

Getting 19+ mpg from one of these trucks under those conditions & terrain with our Stage 1 kit is nothing short of amazing. It would be fun to see just what it would do under those same conditions with our electric fans & underdrive pulleys installed too (not trying to play salesman here, just thinking you should probably hit 21+ mpg in that configuration under those same conditions with those parts added).

Changing the 2-3 upshift point to exactly 2 notches above ST does amazing things for the 3-4 & 4-3 shift characteristics - it's all about total time at what calculated load & how the PCM looks at all of that - and setting up the 2-3 in that manner has an *excellent* impact on that.

Truth be told, we cannot take credit for that configuration, as it was one of our customers who painstakingly tested & tested & tested to come up with the optimal configuration for his needs (which are similar to all of our needs in terms of the issue of getting back up into O/D quicker after cresting a long grade). I wish I could remember the gentleman's name who tried that configuration first and let us know about it, which we then tested a good deal on multiple different trucks & were able to verify it's pretty darn consistent results - I'd sure like to thank him publicly, as his "homework" is paying nice dividends to everyone else we share that information with.

By the way - your results on the tow-perf program aren't going to be *significantly* different, as the amount of spark advance is the same between that program and the "MAX" performance tune - it's just a richer A/F ratio in open loop in the tow-perf that allows for towing - so it shouldn't be much different in terms of the shift characteristics & mpg results.

Thanks again for your report Jon - and congratulations on your retirement after 32 years!

Have fun & talk to you soon,
