Super Chip and long term wear...
Hello all,
I'm in the market for one of those wonderful little superchips and I have been reading tons of info on the subject. I have a quick question that maybe someone can answer. I assume the chips contain a more aggressive program for your PCU and as such you can and should use a higher octane fuel. That is completely fine and I understand that. So if these engines are designed to run at a certain RPM under certain settings etc.,are you in fact decreasing the lifespan of your engine by installing one of these chips? I would hate to install one of these gems and 30k later throw a rod because of the more aggresive program.
Thanks alot
Scott

I don't know the answer to your question, but I doubt if your motor will run any harder than you drive it.
I'm sure if you raced around in your truck all of the time, you could throw a rod just as easily without a performance program as with one.

The chips can't make more compression. They basically change your advance curve, trans shift points and fuel delivery rates in order to make better performance. ( people used to set their advance up a couple of degrees to get better peformance back in the day) I think like was already mentioned, The only real problem with the performance mods is that most people that have them really like to use them ( hammer down all the time) I think if you did a poll you would find that you would have no real diffrence in engine failures between tuned and non tuned vehicles.
Hi Scott,
Thanks for dropping by, and your basic question is one that is veyr common - will the use of the performance tuning shorten the lifespan of your engine? The answer is no - a properly calibrated powertrain program will not decrease the service life of your powertrain.
Just to give you an idea of what we have seen over many years, whether you have a 300 HP lightly modded daily driver or a 550 hp monster Mustang, what matters far more than an engine's potential peak power output when pushed to the limit is how the vehicle is actually operated and maintained in the real world.
The Superchips tuning is not going to alter the lifespan of your engine, but if it's an automatic model, it will generally help to extend the service life of the friction materials inside the transmission (bands, clutches, etc.) due to the reduced slipage.
In short, you can use the Superchips tuning and still have a completely normal engine service life - we've used them on every one of our vehicles for over a decade. In fact, we have many customers who have 100K miles, 150K miles, 200K miles & more on their engines with the Superchips tuning - it's really a matter of how you treat and maintain the vehicle.
If you'd like to go over this in detail, please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below.
Good luck!
