Question Super Chip 1715

FOR THOSE OF YOU WITH THE 1715 PROGRAMER. DO YOU SIMPLY PLUG IT IN AND MAKE THE CHANGES YOU WANT AND UNPLUG PROGRAMER AND PUT IT AWAY TILL YOU WANT TO REPROGRAM AGAIN ? DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE A CHIP YOU PLUG IN AND LEAVE. IF IT IS A PROGRAMMER CAN'T YOU USE IT ON ANY FORD TO REPROGRAM THEM TOO ? I AM INTERESTED IN PURCHASING A CHIP OR PROGRAMER. WHAT ARE YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS. 99 5.4 2WD WHAT MODIFICATIONS GIVE YOU THE BEST RESULTS, INTAKE, EXHAUST, CHIP ?

Mike can answer this one the best but most programmers not only change you stock set up but they remember your original set up too. It is my understanding that if you program more than one vehicle you lose the original program which you might need to have later. You are right though, newer OBDII cars use a programable chip where older cars used a chip that was burned once and that was it. The older computers needed to be removed, opened up and the PROM had to be physically removed and replaced in order to get it reprogrammed.

You can only do one vehicle at a time. You must restore the tuned vehicle back to stock before you could tuner a different vehicle. Do a search on this , it has been discussed before and there is a ton of info. on this very subject.

Hi GCole,

One quick pointer - in cyberspace (Internet, email, or anywhere via the written word), any time you type in all capitals like that, it is considered SHOUTING, and makes your words harder to read. Just FYI..............

With regard to choosing between the traditional Superchip module and the Micro Tuner, that is a matter of whether you are going to do more involved engine modifications that would require custom engine tuning to compensate - things like a supercharger, larger fuel injectors, changing the MAF, nitrous oxide, ported heads, camshaft changes, etc.

Things like an intake kit, a cat-back exhaust system, a larger throttle body, electric fans, underdrive pulleys & shorty headers can all be done and still use the tuning that is in the Micro Tuner in these late-model F-150's - which is why most people use the Micro Tuner, as you get 3 different programs, an easier installation, a built-in OBD-II code scanner, and all it's other features.

If I were you, I would go with the Micro Tuner.

Now, in terms of which modifications are actually going to be most effective, because we specialize in improving the performance of these F-150's we can give you a lot of great info about that. The Top 3 best bang for the buck mods, in order of performance improvement per dollar spent, are:

1.) Optimizing the powertrain program with the Micro Tuner.

2.) Reduce restriction in the air intake tract with the Air Force One intake kit.

3.) Reduce restriction on the exhaust side using the Magnaflow cat-back exhaust system.

For your first 3 mods, that would be the order to do them in, and the exact brand of parts to use, as they work the best.

Over on our web site at www.TroyerPerformance.com, we offer all those parts, both one at a time as well as in combos, like the Micro Tuner and the Air Force One, or all 3 as in our Stage 1 kit for your truck.

Now from there, after you have done those first 3 mods, it's on to things like electric fans, underdrive pulleys, headers, & larger throttle body, roughly in that order (as far as the "bang for the buck" value goes).

I would suggest taking some time to visit our web site, and look not only in the individual sections (Superchips, Intake, Exhaust, Ignition, etc.), but also take a look in our Performance Packages section for the F-150 - there you will see our Stage 1 thru Stage 5 packages, and reading all the details on those will give you a wealth of information about which parts are worth what, etc.

And of course, please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below if you'd like to discuss any of this, ask questions, get a deal, etc., we'll be happy to help.

Best of luck with your truck,
