Questions for "Guru" Superchips_Distributor
In my endless search for in depth information on programmers/tuners I ran across this site and many of your past posts. Even though I am a GM truck owner, I have learned more from your posts than I have been able to learn on any other sites! Would you give me the chance to pick your brain and take some new found information back to my GM forums? These are the questions we have on other forums on tuners in general and also some specific to the superchips max tuners:
1) Hypertech says it is illegal to tune at midrange. Is this correct? If not, how does SC get Carb approved and what is the process must they go through to get it done? The reason for this question is that some doubt the midrange tuning advertised by SC because of the information given out by Hypertech.
2) What is the differences between the Towing performance setting and the Max performance settings? The question are:
A)Is the towing performance setting designed to enhance towing performance or is it just a less aggressive tune to prevent detonation?
B)What changes does SC make in the Max performance setting. More/Less fuel?More timing? More timing at WOT? More timing at midrange?
3) Which setting (perf. towing/max perf.) would have the most "potential" for increased fuel mileage (or the least potential for lost mileage) in a daily driver when not towing?
4) How do you feel about the Canned tune provided by the Predator vs. the SC canned tune? Do you feel the Max performance tune provided by SC is more aggressive than the canned tune provided by the Predator?
5) What does SC do with Torque Management? Take it out? Reduce it and leave some in for drivetrain protection?
Leave it all in?
I would greatly appreciate some specific information you would have the time to give!
Thanks....Scott

Hi Scott,
That's quite an ambitious first post - hmmm..................
If you've been reading my posts for any length of time, then you've no doubt also seen me say many times how it takes 100-200 times longer to type than to talk - and that consequently I do not do details via the written word, either here or in email, and that for anything detailed, or multiple questions, etc., etc., you'll always need to give us a call.
These are "the basics," & so each time the next person asks the same basic questions we refer you to use the search feature to read any of our many past posts on all this, or please feel free to give us a call & I'll be happy to spend some item going over all of this with you personally, whichever you prefer. Using the search feature will allow you to access all those posts about those and any other topics, and the icon to access it is right there in the upper right portion of your screen here.
I'll go over a couple of things here now briefly...........
One thing you mentioned I will respond to now, is this BS claim that Hypertech has been telling people for years about how it's supposedly "illegal" to tune on part-throttle. Right. Superchips has been deliberately flaunting federal laws for 12 years - in a pig's eye. That is BS, plain and simple, as just about anyone can figure out for themselves pretty quickly with a scan tool. Anyone can easily take a look at (and datalog) the various operational parameters while the vehicle is running with and without the Superchips tuning and immediately see reality. Yes, Superchips *does* tune on part-throttle, and no, it's not illegal to do so - and for years & years, CARB has tested & approved the Superchips tuning. You can even tune on part-throttle and *not* pass emissions - if you sell the product for off-road use - Superchips doesn't do that of course, that's just a tidbit of information regarding "legality" of tuning on part-throttle - sure you can, and if you can't pass emissions, or aren't a big enough company with deep enough pockets to bother with emissions certification, it's labeled & sold for off-road use. But in general, tuning on part-throttle (in closed loop) is not "illegal."
To answer 2a: The same thing that helps "performance" helps towing performance - more power everywhere, that's pretty simple, and is no different for towing than it is for "performance."
It's *critical* to have the closed loop tuning, so you have more torque available all the time, at any throttle position - that helps any kind of performance, all the time. Towing is perhaps among the most important applications for this. The primary difference between the "max" performance tune & the "tow-perf" tune is in the A/F ratios - the concern is for EGT's when towing max loads up a long grade - so the towing performance tune uses a richer A/F than the "max" performance tune does.
The max performance tune is always going to yield the best mpg, as it is the most "aggressive" tune - meaning using maximum safe timing for use with good quality premium gas, and it uses A/F ratios optimized for best safe & sustainable power in this type of vehicle. You can still take the heaviest configuration of F-150 and load it up to it's max GVW with passengers or bed load, and *still* be able to use that max performance tune - the only limitation is no towing, and that is simply because if we have a heavy truck towing at max capacity that has to climb mountains, we don't want it seeing grossly elevated EGT's.
For everything else on your list - again, I'll be more than happy to discuss this with you in detail by phone, it's just far too much to type out to really go over this properly here, & thanks in advance for your understanding on that, Scott.
Give us a shout at our number listed below when you get a chance Scot, & until then, Merry Christmas to you & yours!
