Mike T., 1715 Install, no start

Mike or anyone else heard of this?
"I know a mechanic at a Ford dealer... The micro tuner set off the anti-theft system." The individual told me he installed the 1715 program and the his truck would not start after install.I do not know his model year at this time. I did a search and did not really come up with anything. I never heard of the anti-theft system preventing the vehicle to start after install. My tuner never gave me any problems during install. I'm wondering if it is not operator error. Any thoughts

Seems to me I remember reading something in the book about this happening sometimes. I think it says to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery for 15 minutes.

That is what I thought. Long story short, for financial reasons I had to sell my tuner. The guy e-mailed me and said he installed it and now his truck would not start and he wants his $ back. I emailed him 3 times with all the info I could think of to cause his problem. I gave him my phone number and told him I would assist him in any way I could. I even told him to come to this site for info. That was 4 days ago. Now he is crying foul and wants his $ back after his mechanic buddy told him the microtuner caused his problems. I have asked him for his model year, engine, ecm code, etc. with no response. Before I give him his money back, I want to cover all bases because I feel all he had to do was disconnect nis neg. terminal.

Hi df,

In the Micro Tuner's installation manual, it clearly tells the vehicle owner what to do in that situation - which is to clear the PCM by interrupting power to it for a long enough period of time - just as the manual instructs.

If you want to refund him, then that is up to you - but if you do, that unit may come back to you VIN-locked since they attempted to tune that vehicle - I don't know what they did or what actually happened, as I wasn't there of course - but if it's VIN-locked, then it will be worthless to *anyone* (including you) and cannot be used on any vehicle to tune it until it's sent into Superchips and pay a fee to "unlock" it so it can be used again.

Good luck!

Thanks for the prompt response Mike. Talked to the individual. Our trucks are an exact match as far as year, engine, and ecm code. He claims he did try to disconnect the neg. terminal. I believe he is going to try to reload the program again. Once again, thanks for your help.

It did the same to mine. It fried my PCM. $613 later it was fixed. Superchips refunded the total cost. I installed on my new PCM and it works flawlessly. I think if it was an older truck as mine was, then that could be the problem.

Hope it works out.............

Hi JBRIII,

Thanks for your post!

Your situation was very rare, and Superchips took care of matters, of course - thanks very much for pointing that out, & glad you are now able to enjoy the Micro Tuner.

What I wanted to comment on just for everyone's FYI in general, just briefly, is that such a problem is not any more likely on any particular model year, or say, on older vehicles, etc. - that actually has nothing to do with it. If a problem comes up, it's not due to model year (within the model years the tuners are for, of course), or because a vehicle was a '97 or a '98, etc.

In other words, we don't see any increased problem rate for say, 1997 or 1998 (or any other model year) model year trucks.

Just FYI................

Glad everything's working properly for you & thanks again for your post!
