Increasing Gas Mileage
Increasing Gas Mileage
I'm new to this site and to being a Ford Truck owner so "Hello!" I just recently bought a 2003 F150 King Ranch that has a 6" Fabtech suspension lift and 35" BFG KO tires on it. I'm currently getting about 10 miles per gallon and would be greatly interested in how to increase that without changing the size of my tires. I know that there are chips out there but I don't know which one to get. I do know that I need to be able to download the factory configuration so as to not void the warranty. Please any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!
Hi wooly1965,
Wow, that is quite the truck you got there - a King Ranch, lifted with 35's, etc., is a very nice (and expensive & heavy) truck - darned nice way to get introduced to the F-150!
Actually, getting 10 mpg with that truck isn't bad at all - but yes, there are some things you can certainly do to improve the mpg.
The first thing would be to go with the Superchips Micro Tuner, as you';ll have your stock factory program stored in it so you can return to stock at any time for vehicle service, etc., as you mentioned. The Micro Tuner will give you a thorough optimization of the powertrain program, and it has 3 different programs you can use - 87 octane tow-safe, premium gas tow-safe, and then the premium gas "max" performance program - and you can switch among these with the Micro Tuner.
Now the potential for improvement in fuel mileage isn't going to be huge in *your* vehicle, because of it's extremely heavy weight - you can usually see anywhere from 0.5 mpg to 1.5 mpg, roughly - there are very few F-150's that can approach the kind of weight you have there, you're easily over 3 tons & have a big aero profile to boot. On the 87 octane program in the Micro Tuner, you can actually save a little bit of money for gas, but the other 2 programs will require the use of premium gasoline - so even though the mpg will generally improve, you won't actually be able to save *money* on gasoline with those programs, only the 87 octane program really has that potential & ability. Since that 87 octane program is in there, yes, you can improve the mpg via tuning as you mentioned and actually spend a little bit less cash for gas.
Next up for improving mpg specifically come things like converting over to electric fans & a set of underdrive pulleys - you can gain upwards of 30 HP to the rear wheels, and another 1.0-3.0 mpg as well with these 2 mods - they are actually the very best in terms of the actual potential for spending less money on fuel.
You'll want to take a look our our web site, which is located at www.TroyerPerformance.com - click on "Shop" once the home pages loads, and then you;ll see all the individual sections - Intake, Exhaust, Pulleys, Fans, and so on - you'll want to take a look at the Performance Packages section as well most likely, lots of great Stage 1 thru Stage 5 packages there.
And of course, please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below - this is a lot of info to go over & absorb here, so you'll probably want to give us a call to go over various details, etc. - we'll be happy to help.
Congrats on that beautiful new King Ranch F-150, and we hope you'll hang out here with us in your spare time!

You're very welcome, anytime.
And by the way - in case you may not be aware, if you have some spare time and would like to, you can set up a gallery here and upload pics, etc. of your truck, if you like - plenty of people would like to see a nice lifted King Ranch!
Have fun & talk to you soon,
