160 degree thermostat
I just received my superchip max microtuner in the mail, sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!! Yesterday I received my 16 degree hypertech thermostat. Will the superchip account for the thermostat? Is it going to still cause a coolant temperature too low code to be thrown? Has anyone changed the thermostat and or the superchip that might know the answer to this.
Hi George,
I'm soooooo....... glad you asked before you stuck that abnormally cold thermostat in there - please, DON'T DO THAT!
*Never* use a thermostat of less than 180 degrees in these vehicles (or just about any other computer-controlled vehicle), as your power won't be what it could be, and your heater won't work very well in winter.
Your engine will make it's highest peak power at a coolant temperature of somewhere between 200 and 210 degrees - this is why your factory thermostat is 192 degrees, and we recommend that you leave the stock 192 degree unit in place. Take a look at race cars - they try to keep their coolant temps at 200-210 degrees optimally - because that is where best power is made - this is also where you get your best fuel mileage & lowest emissions, by the way.
The only time we recommend anything cooler than the factory 192 degree unit (and then use a 180 degree t-stat) is if you are doing *frequent* drag racing, or *frequent* towing of heavy loads up long grades, hills, or mountains, etc. Otherwise, just leave the stock 192 degree unit in place.
Good luck!
