Unhappy speedo after gear change?

So I just finished putting 4:10 gears in my 99 f-150 4x4. 4.2 v6, manual tranny. blah blah blah.... I have a problem. I took it to the ford dealership to get the speedo re programmed and they said the lowest it would accept was 3.55, and so we did that and told the trucks ecm that i had the smallest tires it would accept to trick it a little more. It helped a little but now when my speedo says 70 mph, I am actually going about 65 mph (thanks to mr. gps) I dont care that much but I was wondering if there is anyway to further fix this. Oh yeah I run 265/75/16 tires on the street and I dont care what it says for my swampers (36") cause thay are only on for off-roading. Thanks again. Also before the tire size trick thingy the speedo said 70 mph when i was going about 58 mph.

Hi Ignorance,

All dealership service departments can do is to enter in a gear ratio and/or a tire size that was originally offered by Ford on that vehicle, period. They can't do any other changes, can't enter any other ratios or tire sizes, period. So anytime you install a gear ratio or tire size that wasn't offered by the factory, they can't fix that (as they should be able to, IMHO), it's going to be off and needs to be corrected.

You will need to use either a custom programmed Superchip, which we can supply you with, or if you want to wait a couple of months, you'll then be able to use our Superchips Micro Tuner to take care of that. (The Micro Tuner has been out for a while now, but the 4.2 V6's aren't in there yet, they are being added roughly near the end of this summer).

If you'd like to go over this in more detail, please give us a call, our number is listed below. You can also read about the Superchips products on our web site, over at www.TroyerPerformance.com - click on "Shop" once the home page loads, then you'll see the Superchips section. Click on "List by Vehicle Type" so you can just select the Ford applications, and then look for our Part# 1100, or 1300, or for the Superchips Micro Tuner for Ford Trucks & SUV's, our Part# 1715 (that's the one that will do the V6's late Summer). You won't be able to order a standard Superchip to do this from our web site, because you need a speedometer correction that will require custom programming to correct your speedo for your gear ratio & tire size changes of course, so you'll want to call us to go over those details.

This is easy to fix your speedometer, but it has to be done electronically via an aftermarket device, basically. And if you do not want to have performance tuning via the Superchip in addition to correcting your speedometer, we also carry devices that will *only* correct the speedometer and not give you any performance tuning. Those are not on our web site, for those you'll need to call us at our number listed below.

Good luck with your truck (nice mods by the way!), & don't hesitate to call us for help with this, it's easily taken care of!

Hey Ignerence,

I also have a 99 F-150 and I got a Superchip Flip Chip from Mike. I got mine because I went from 3.31 gears to 4.10 and switched the tire size from 235/70/16 to 265/75/16. I drive the interstate alot and when my speedometer was on 100 old ladies were passing me, so I just had to do it.

I called them up and the Flip Chip was the best deal. I got it programmed for 87 octane and 94, so I can switch whenever I want. I havent switched back to 87 though because paying 1.70 for gas is worth it because of the gains I have seen.

With a 5 mph gap I would wait until the MicroTuner comes out so you can have one more option, in my case I had to do it because my odometer was ticking at almost twice the speed it was before and I had absolutely no idea how fast I was going.

Now I pass cops all the time and dont get pulled over, which is accurate enough for me.

The good thing about the Microtuner is that you can tune yourself. You change tires, just plug it in and push buttons, and as far as I know when you sell the truck you can just go on ebay and sell the tuner.

I would wait if I were you, but I would definitely go with the Superchip or Microtuner, and I would definitely get it from Mike.

When I had trouble with my superchip (not Mikes or superchips fault) I called Mike and he returned my call a while later, at night (I forget the time but it was late, after dinner) and he walked me through this setup while I was working. The only other person who ever called me that late was a telemarketer. You cant beat that.
