Do you have to use a different octane gasoline when you install a new superchhips computer module?

Thanks. That sucks that you have to use premium gas. It's so much more expensive. Would it be possible to use the grade of gas (I think it's 89)(medium grade) instead?

No, to get the full benefit of the chip 91 or better is required. If you just want the shift improvements and smooth idle you could buy a flip chip with one bank programmed for 87 and the other for high performance with 91 or better gas. Give Mike at Performance Products a call. He will answer all your questions including some you didn't even ask.

Hi MFT98,

Actually, premium gas is not that much more expensive at all in reality when used with the Superchips tuning, this is just the common misconception that almsot all people who have never done it will automatically assume, and naturally so.

In reality that is not the case at all, the fuel cost analysis has been done many times by numerous Superchip owners here. Using a 20 cent per gallon cost delta & a 50-50 mix of city & highway driving, the most you'll spend additional to use premium gas with the Superchips tuning is a maximum of $100 per 10,000 miles driven, and for many people it's even less. The proverbial drop in the bucket.

One of the most basic aspects of getting more performance from any gasoline engine has always been tuning it for better quality fuel, that's been true for decades upon decades. Optimizing the powertrain program is the single best bang for the buck performance enhancement you can install in one of these vehicles, as nothing else will deliver the same performance gains of the Superchips tuning for the same or less cost. This is true of most computer-controlled vehicles by the way, optimizing the powertrain programming is virtually always the best bang for the buck.

You cannot use anything less than high quality *premium* gas of at least 91 octane with the Superchips Micro Tuner, as was correctly pointed out by others responding to you in this thread. However, we can make a custom Superchip module for you that you can use with lower octane fuels, you just won't see the power gains you will with our normal performance tuning for premium gas. As others also mentioned, there's always our 2-program Superchip Flip Chip, which we make in a dual octane configuration so you can have the best of both worlds, using whatever level of octane you want, and just run premium gas when you want maximum power, flipping the switch to change programs.

Or, there are always plenty other modifications you can do to increase power and performance and still use cheap low-grade gas, give us a call at our number listed below & we can go over all of that in detail with you.

I also thought that it was too bad that you had to use the higher octane for proper performance of the chip but it really isn't that much more expensive and I have experienced a 2.3 mpg gain under normal highway driving. Not to mention the kick in the *** when you need it.
I was traveling 40-45 mph on an interstate change when I saw an 18 wheeler that I had to merge with. I took a split second to think and decided that a stomp on the right pedal would be better than a tap on the left one. Yee-Haw!!! That was the first real opportunity I had to see what the chip would do. If you aint got one of these chips you aint got nothin! Just my oppinion.
