Micro tuner or Superchip for Man. Trans
Micro tuner or Superchip for Man. Trans
I have a 1999 F150 4.2L V-6 with a 5 speed manual trans. Would the superchip suffice for my truck or does the micro tuner offer better performance for the extra $$? I do have larger tires but I'm not sure how that affects me since I have a manual tranny.
Thanks

Hi ND,
Welcome to F-150 Online!
The Superchips F-150 Micro Tuner is only for the V8 F-150's, for the 4.2 V6 F-150's the traditional Superchip module needs to be used. We can do the custom programming needed to correct the speedometer & odometer for changes to gear ratio and tire sizes on the 99 & up F-150's.
There isn't going to be any difference in performance between the traditional chip module versus the Micro Tuner, except in cases where we here at Performance have special programs we've worked with Superchips on to further improve the performance for those using high quality 93-94 octane premiums & not doing any towing, etc. But in terms of comparing the standard Superchips performance programs in either the Superchip module or the Micro Tuner, there's no difference in the power gains between those 2, as the engine tuning is exactly the same in both.
Your 4.2 V6 can gain up to 25 HP & 31 lbs./ft. of torque from the Superchips tuning, and it will also help take care of the 4.2's problem of being weak below 2500 rpm, which makes a nice improvement in overall driveability.
Give us a call if you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, our contact info is just below.
Good luck with your truck!

Hi 01,
If there were anything new on that we would have already announced it.
It's not going to be soon, as there simply isn't enough real demand for a Micro Tuner for the 4.2 V6 F-150's at this time, so we'll just have to see how the demand develops (or *if* it develops) as time goes on, basically.
Any 4.2 V6 owners that want the Superchips tuning will need to use the traditional Superchip module just as they've always done, for at least the foreseeable future. It takes thousands of units sold for a manufacturer to be able to recoup the tremendous R&D expenses for this type of device, and the R&D has to be recouped before there is even the first dollar of profit.
Superchips, like any manufacturer, has to put their R&D resources into those applications that actually are in enough demand to be profitable, so they're currently working on things like the all-inportant single biggest demand application, which is the new 6.0 Powerstroke diesel. Then there's all the new Mopar gas engine applications that we haven't done since the 1995 model year, and things like our Troyer Performance 2003 Lightning R&D project which begins February 3rd, the 2003 Harleys and all the other 2003 new model year R&D to get done, etc............................
As soon as we have anything concrete on this, we'll of course let everyone know here on the boards, just as we did with the current F-150 V8/SuperDuty V10 Micro Tuner.
Sorry I don't have more concrete positive news for you!
