Strange smell from heater

Frequently (but not every day) when I fire up my 2000 Supercab and let it warm up I get a strong odor coming out of the heater.
The smell resembles mildew and/or an electrical burning burning smell. I live it Idaho, so its not real wet here and when this first started happening it was just cold and dry. The smell is VERY strong and I drive to work with my windows down. The strange part is that it doesn't do it every time, and it never does it from on my drive *home* from work. It seems to do it every 3 days (or so). I was hoping some of you guys had some suggestions or maybe have seen this.
Thanks!!

My truck's heater does the same thing. I was told it is just the glues and adhesives in the heater ducting giving off a smell similar to what you described. An electrical burning smell.

Ummmmm.....yah. I've got the same issue. Took it to a Ford dealer who
told me they couldn't duplicate the problem, of course. Smells a little like
coolant dumping into your heater box, doesn't it? Pehaps with a faint whiff of mildew? The dealer schmucks said they found no "leak" in my heater core, and they subsequently dumped about 2 gallons of Cheap Stink into the heater box, followed by a liberal dosing from a water hose. The smell stopped for awhile. Mine odor seems to occur most often when the compressor is on. So, if i'm using it, it turn it off about a mile from home and flip the controls to "Panel" and crank the heat to let the core dry. Seems to work. Hassle.

Another guy on this site

posted a while back that he had a bad smell coming from his heater/AC too. ONly in his case, I guess his pet snake crawled up in there and died!!!!!!! Imagine how bad that smell must have been? wonder what the Ford shop guys would have said about that one?

I wonder how he got that snake out of there? I have'nt heard anything on it. But if I took a whiff of a dead snake in my heater vents, I would vomit.

heater problem

Check out the Interior Care Forum under the posted subject of "Musty Oder". It worked for me.

I remember once when my car ended up swallowing a pigeon. The body came to rest in fragments...some on the radiator, some by the air intake. Cooking-dead-rotten-bird, nasty smell.

Years ago I had two young kittens crawl up under the hood. When I fired that thing up....wow...what a mess!
