Door Crack Mania !!!
JUST BOUGHT MY TRUCK 5 MONTHS AGO, AND I'M PROUD TO SAY I'VE BEEN CRACK FREE!!! HOPEFULLY I WON'T GET THESE O SO DREADED AND DESPISED DOOR CRACKS. IT WOULD MAKE ME MADDER THAN A HORNET TO SEE ONE THEM S.O.B'S IN ONE OF MY DOOR'S. AND I KNOW YOU OR ANYBODY ELSE WOULD GET MAD TOO. ONLY TIME WILL TELL.
Consider yourself lucky (for the moment). From what I understand of the whole issue, it's only a matter of time. Sometime when you're bored, open your drivers door, and stand at the end of it so you can reach the power window button (if so equiped) and look at the door handle. Go through a roll down and roll up cylcle. Notice how much the panel flexes! That's what causes the crack. If you don't have any flex, then you probably won't have a problem. What year is your rig?
I wish you the best of luck on keeping a crack free door!

HEY MitchF150. I DRIVE A NEW 2001 F-150 XL. I DON'T KNOW IF THE LATER MODELS ARE PRONE TO THESE CRACKS, ARE THEY? MINE HAS THE MANUAL CRANK WINDOWS. ARE THEY BAD FOR THIS? OR IS THIS ONLY FOR THE POWER WINDOWS?
I think the newer ones are probably less prone to it now, but I've heard that they may still have a problem.
Also heard that it really didn't matter if you have power or crank windows. The flexing occurs when the window is cranked up and seats itself in the window frame.
At least on mine ('97 F150, pwr windows....) that's when the most flex occurs. I just try to limit the number of times I have to roll the window up all the way. When I do, I try to apply presure on the door with the palm of my hand as the window seats itself. Don't know if it's doing any good, but my crack has not gotten any longer!!
All you can really do is check to see how much flex your particular door has and go from there. I would have thought Ford would have this fixed by now, because it's been around for some time.
It seems that even the "fix" still doesn't work. Most have reported that the crack comes back after a couple months.

The door cracks are definite in every truck (that hasn't had the preventative maintenance) that was made before April 2001, if it was made after, it got the preventative fix at the factory. I haven't heard of any since then with cracks, so Iit seems as though they have it under control now. I have the cracks and I haven't got any fix yet, but my dealer did offer me an 80/20% fix cost, me paying the 20%, but I just can't see which 20% is my fault. Good luck, and Will316, darn lucky that you don't have any yet. The flex of the doors when the windows roll up and down is the main cause of this, compounded with opening and closing and any stress on the door, so it will happen eventually, if it doesn't have the fix. There will never be a recall because it is not a 'safety issue', according to Ford, but there is a TSB, I am not sure of what the number is on it. You can find it on this site under "Recalls & TSB's". Power windows happen faster, because they are generally used more, or used faster than manual, but every truck without the fix will get them.
I have a 1999 F150 with power windows and found the crack yesterday on the drivers door. Took it to Ford today and of course they know nothing! I asked the Service manager how would they fix it since it is still under warranty and he said the body shop would repair it. I told him I don't want a bondo/paint repair, he said I would have to see the body repair manager who happens to be out today. Anybody know what Ford is doing to fix this? My friend has a 2000 F150 and has the same problem and I found one on a truck in Fords used truck lot! So what are they going to do??
door crack anxiety!
So there is a fix that was applied to trucks manufactured after May, 2001? Can anyone tell what the fix is? How did they remedy the problem?
Last month I purchased a 2001 F150 S/C 4x4 that is stamped manufactured in 7/01. Supposedly then, this vehicle should have the door crack fix on it? Is it a problem with both power and manual window models (mine is fairly spartan inside)?
Sure hope I don't see them in the future and hope Ford does right by their customers who have trucks with the problem.
For now, I'm loving my new ride! GL to all.

I was reading Ford's TSB and fix procedure at www.alldata.com earlier.
They have 3 different procedures in place depending on the serverity of the crack. It's a confusing procedure but this is basically what the TSB states:
>If the is a 2" or less crack they will weld the crack and add steel reinforcement in place on the inner door.
>Same procedure as a preventative fix if there is no door crack.
>If the door crack is larger than 2", the door skin is replaced.
Ford is officially calling this a bumper to bumper warranty issue and covering it under the 36,000/3 year warranty but anyone that asks should get the 80/20 customer satifaction program and if they push it, I'm sure that Ford will cover this under the perforation warranty.
