Angry My paint is cracking!!

Hey everyone,

When I was washing my truck yesterday, I noticed that my paint was cracking in two different places on the roof! Has anyone had this problem, and if so, did ford replace the paint or what?

Thanks,
Chris

Is it the paint or the clearcoat? If paint is chipping is will be dark underneath. If its the clearcoat, it'll stil be red, but duller, almost like plastic is coming off. My clearcoat is chipping around my grill cause bugs & sun wear and tear it. Anywayz, the trucks almost 4 years old and i don't think ford will redo it after that long. But i'm not sure. I got a shop to redo the piece around the grill for $175. Thats the only place mine was chippin, so it worked out. Hope this helps.

Where on the roof? If it's in the "rain" gutters, then it's fairly common. Nothing to worry about, actually. If you want them to, the dealer will repaint it. Chances are, it will crack again anyway.

I have yet to hear of it being anything but a cosmetic problem in this particular area.

Thanks for your help guys, but unfortunately for me, the paint is cracking smack dab in the middle of the roof. I've had the truck at the Ford dealer for 3 days now, and when I called yesterday, they said they haven't had a chance to take it to their body shop yet ! Starting to get pissed...I'll keep you posted...

Thumbs down

If your paint is cracking in the center of the roof could it possibly be directly over your dome light. I was waxing my truck roof with the door open in the shade and burnt my fingers on the roof directly over the lighted dome light. Lots of heat there and in the southern sun that could crack paint, even worse on a black truck

Hey, I've got an Explorer 1998; It's got 41,000 miles and I've only had it 2 1/2 years and the paint is cracking on my hood. Here's the story of what has happened: 2 Months after I bought this explorer NEW the clearcoat was coming off of the right front fender. The selling dealer fixed it. Now 2 years and about 4 months later my paint on the hood is cracking. (Keep in mind it has NEVER been through an automatic car wash. It has always been hand washed almost once a week and waxed every 3 months.) Ford DOES NOT want to fix this because the paint warrenty ran out at 36,000 miles. (I'm only over by 5,000 miles.) If you get it fixed: go back to your selling dealer and tell them how you feel about paying that much money for something and the paint to be coming off in such a short time; and ask them to pay 2/3 of the bill. (This is what they have offered me.) Keep in mind: They will have to strip it down to the metal and start over. Also, they won't do the whole thing if it's not cracking all over they say that they can't predict what will happen to the rest of the truck. Good Luck!!! I know exactly how you feel!!!!!!!! Also, Since The selling dealer fixed my fender no other ford dealer can do anything about the paint.
