docker,

Up until I read the Consumer Reports issue, I had been using the Meguiar's polish and Carnauba wax...I stuck with the polish and switched to the Zymol cleaner wax as mentioned in the report. Both are clear coat safe and did a brilliant job with my Black finish!!!

Did you use Meguiars Polish on your new truck
before the Zymol? And did you use the Zymol cleaner/wax as in Consumer Reports or just plain wax?

Wink

Well, I like to start by washing the truck with a little mineral spirits or paint thinner with a little sand on my S.O.S. pad (to help get the dirt off the paint)...

Then I like to dry the truck with my gas powered bead blaster to help "sheet" the water off...

Then I like to polish the truck using a No.7 chrome polish with 120 grit sand paper to apply it....

Then finally, I take the Black and Decker superduty high powered electric sander (with dual exhaust, turbo ram air induction, and Nitrous O) and extra fine 220 grit pad and put a super high gloss shine on the truck -

I did this the first weekend I got the truck and it looks great! I am really paranoid about the look of my truck and taking care of it so I really spend lots of time babying it...

I am new to the message board and really enjoy all the comments about waxing and polishing. I have a new F-150 Lariet that is bright red with a clearcoat finish. I have a really basic question. What is the difference between waxing and polishing? I usually just wax.

BillVirginia. To put it very simply, polish makes the paint shiny and wax keeps it that way.
When you see your finish getting hazy or dull, or too many of those hairline scratches, it may be time to polish.

Thanks IndyFan...you seem to be my answer man. Another question...it seems like the wax and polish to use is Zymol...It sounds great from what everybody is saying. It sounds like everybody waxes there vehicles quite often...I usually waxed my old car once a year. Would you have someone apply paint sealer if you were only going to polish and wax your car once or twice a year? And if you were going to polish and wax your car once a month, would you apply a paint sealer?

I decided to see what everyone was raving about so I went out and got a bottle of Zymol. It works pretty well. It did wipe off really easily. I don't think that it had the reflective properties of the meguires but I had noticed that the meguires wasn't lasting very long. I hope this stuff does last longer.

I also went out and bought some Zymol this weekend. It does go on very easy and comes off the same. Looks pretty good, the truck is only 6 weeks old so it looked pretty good before the Zymol. One concern in the fact that it claims to be water based. I rinsed the applicator out with warm soapy water and it rinsed "completely" out. I hope this isn't an example of what is going to happen to the wax after the first rain...

It did a average job of removing misc stains from the paint. i.e. rustproofing overspray, tree stuff, etc. I only say average because at $12.84 a bottle I was expecting a noticable difference between it and cheaper cleaner/waxes.

BillVirginia. Speaking only for myself, I wouldn't use a paint sealer, ever. However, as far as waxing, most waxes tend to last from 1 to 3 months depending on the environment your truck has to live in.
The standard "beading water" trick is usually a pretty good indicator of the condition of your wax, but you have to wash the vehicle first before checking for beading; oil from other cars spraying on yours will cause beading on any finish, with or without wax.
There are some paint treatments that cause the water to "sheet" instead of bead so this particular test wouldn't work.
