I wondered the same thing when I got my 99. Should I wax immediately or wait a few months. I also heard about the wait period to let the paint cure. Here is the low down on the info I got from other members here as well as the Ford dealer. New paints from the factory are "baked" onto the vehicle such that by the time the vehicle is delivered the paint is cured. If for example you have your vehicle repainted, that paint cannot be "baked" onto the vehicle because the heat would melt the trim and other parts of the finished vehicle. Therefore if you repaint you should let the paint cure before waxing.

So that all said and done, wax her good when you get it. The first weekend after I got mine I gave her a good wax. I have re-waxed her every 3-4 months since. In fact, this coming Saturday she is slated for a thorough wash followed by a good wax. Get her ready for the summer.

Thanks for the quick response and advice. I think I will plan a good wash and wax the first weekend.

Today's paints are so free of solvents that they practically dry before hitting the truck -- and need every bit of help they can get (avoid the swirly-brush car washes with clearcoat -- especially black).

Question To Wax or Not to Wax

My new 2001 Supercrew will arrive in a couple of weeks and I was wondering if I should give her a coat of wax when she arrives. I've always heard that a new paint job should cure 3-6 months. Is this really true?

Also, what wax would you recommend?

Thanks,

That might have been true when cars were sprayed with laquer and the solvents needed time to evaporate. Today's paints are much different and are cured by the time you get your truck. I would be more worried about what will happen to your paint if you went 6 months unprotected, with all the bird crap, acid rain, etc. leaving permanent scars in the clear coat. Go to www.zainobros.com for more info.
