Road Salt!!!
When you live where I do - where they use tons of salt - you quickly get used to swapping wheels based on the season. I actually have 3 full sets. I have a set of 20" American Racing chrome wheels with nice, fat Goodyear tires I run from about April thru Novenmer, the factory 17" wheels & tires for when it's cold, but not a ton of snow, and another set of 17" XLT wheels with Cooper Snow & Ice tires for when it's really nasty.
As a follow-up to this thread...it's crazy b/c we've been getting nailed with snow here in VA....more than we've had in years. We usually get ZERO snow in the winter. When I bought my rims a couple of weeks ago, I had no idea we were going to get hit with this snow, and I had NO time to at least put a coat of wax on them. All I've been able to do is go to the power wash everyday after riding on salt to blast them clean with soap and water.
I "think" I have already noticed some minor pitting in a few areas....even though that could be anything. I'm hoping some quality polish will bring them back as best as possible. Plus, I've found some good wheel wax that American Racing sells. Moving forward, I'm just going to keep them clean as much as possible and then make sure there is a fresh coat of wax anytime I might hit salt...either on the beach on snowboarding in the winter. I've had wheel experts tell me that if I maintain them good with wax there is no need to take them off, especially if I'm only seeing salt once or twice per year. Hope that does the trick!!!! Holding on to my factory wheels just in case.

Years ago I use to run chrome rims year round when I could not afford to have two sets of wheels and tires. I live in an area where tons of salt and sand are applied to roads regularly in winter. I use to apply liberal amounts of axle grease/ vasaline will also work. in spring head to the self serve spray wash. Messy job but it will prevent the sand and salt from contacting the wheel surface.
looks like all us jersey folks here are pretty close to each other. i'm in burlington county as well.
anyway, i just got some atx artillerys for my truck which are teflon coated. i despise chrome wheels with a passion. so many customers at work that complain when they start to pit/corrode and the tires leak around the bead. of course they never take care of them either and leave them on year-round.
but these teflon coated wheels, even though i've only had them on a couple days, i don't really see any problems occurring. my entire truck is covered in salt after driving through it a couple hundred miles in the past 2 days, but the wheels look brand new like i just took them out of the box. just the small amount of water from the melting ice/snow is enough to rinse the salt off them, that is whatever small amount of salt that sticks.
