I'm guessing that over the years, the oils in the paint have dried up, and claying pulled them all out. Make any sense?

 

it is some sort of solvent or chemical of some type .. there are a couple of spots on the hood where I can actually see finger print ridges in the marks .. my guess is it occurred when the work was done on the engine .. it has all new cooling system installed.. radiator, water pump, etc .. along with some brake work ..

looks almost like brake fluid .. but definately something along the chemical line.

claying wouldn't leave marks like that, plus, they were there prior to washing.

 

There is NO way that is original paint. Single stage sure. But original no way. My dad has a '59 vette that has the original paint and its got cracking and imperfections on it from the fiberglass expanding and contracting.

 

yes, it is original paint.. this car has the same issues .. I just didn't post those pictures ..

the condition of this paint is absolutely horrid. checked all over the place .. several places of failure, multiple cracking issues.

 

Have you tried a krylon rattle can yet? Krylon is paint correction at it's finest! ROFL!!!!!!

 

ok.. i assumed that the area that you worked and showed was representative of the rest of the car. i offered to do up my dads car. he looked at me like i was stupid and told me to leave the garage.

as for original paint .. after thinking about it some more, and after a discussion with troberts, I am inclined to agree that at least some of it is not original, not due to the condition of the fiberglass, but more so due to the evidence of front bumper damage, and the lack of heavy enough checking on the hood and front fenders. They are nowhere near as checked as the top, the trunk and rear quarter panels.

 

most of the old vettes have had some type of repainting done to them. alot of them were picked up in the 70's and 80's by younger guys that were looking to get a hotrod like my dad did.

you are exactly right in what he is thinking. he has had that car the full 21 years of my existance and i cant even tell you a single time i have ever sat in the drivers seat.
