Rain-X

I haven't used this stuff for years and years (two and a half decades, but that makes me feel old.) The only reason I remember stopping it's use was that it was a pain to 'polish' off after you applied it. I tried it again last week before I went on vacation, applied it and used a microfiber to 'polish' it off and it worked great. (back then I'm not even sure we had microfibers.)

Well, when bigger bugs hit the fluids kind of rolled off, but, of course, little bugs stuck. Finally I had enough and used the windshield washer and wipers. Big mistake, streaked like hell, the cleaning fluid just rolled off and the wipers smeared the bug guts. I finally had to pull over and clean the windows. (yes, I had a bottle of window cleaner, a bag of microfibers, and UQD with me.)

Plan A, rain-x, sucked. What's plan B? Nothing? Is there a better product? I have used wax in the past. (three decades ago.) Is that the way to go?

I'm mainly just trying to protect the windshield and make it easier to clean. I have no problem using my wipers to keep it 'wiped' in the rain as I get new wipers every service whether I need them or not.

I don't know of any great product that would do what you asked and not smear bug guts. I like Rain-X and will keep on using it. Hopefully somebody else has a better idea.

I don't think anything is going to keep windshield wipers from spreading bug guts over the windshield.... Rain-X is not made for this purpose either.

It should be easier to remove the bugs then with a windshield that is not coated but this is all relative. I lived in Florida for 25 years and you learn simply not to use wiper fluid and the wipers to remove these type of things.

Either stop at a gas station and use the wand they provide or keep one in the car. The bug sponge on one side is the easiest way to remove bugs from the windshield. A few swipes and eveything should clean up easily.

Why bother with RainX? Just wax your windows when you wax the paint.

I use the washer fluid with bug remover in it. Works great for removing bug guts. I can't stand a dirty windshield.

FYI, it takes a few application of Rain-X for it to work correctly. I have been using it since the late 80's when it came out and love it! If you have never used it before apply it the first time very liberally. Apply again after it is dry to cover any spots that you missed. I always use a damp paper towel or MF to remove the haze once it is dry. No streaking ever from the wipers. The key is to make sure you remove the haze completely.

I use it on all of my windows and even my exterior mirrors. I find it very difficult to see in the rain when I rent a car or drive one without Rain-X. If it is raining and I am going over 50 I don't even use my wipers. The water just beads up and rolls right off.

I re-apply about every 3-4 months on the windshield. The other windows only need a fresh coat every 6-8 months.

I've used Rain-X more than once and have never like it. I do however like the idea of it. Which is why I use Adam's Brilliant Spray Glaze. Looks great on chrome, paint, windows, lights, etc. I would just stay away from any colored plastics as I don't know what would happen. Probably look hazey. Also called Express Carnuba at Chemical Guys. Same stuff.

I use Stoner's first, then I use the combo Rain-X cleaner/treatment every time I wash the truck. In between, I use the Rain-X for cleaning the windshield. I also use the Rain-X washer fluid.

^Definately. That's the whole key, do 2 or 3 coats. I tried 1 coat once, smeared like hell and actually made visibility worse in light rain. The second time I tried it I cleaned the windshield with Stoners twice, then put 2 coats of Rain-x. The results are MUCH better.

I dont know what you guys are doing wrong, but one light coat of Rain-X leaves me not even having to use wipers in the rain. Which is exactly what its meant for.

I wouldn't say it sucks, I think it works pretty good ...

I do like the green Rain-X windshield wiper fluid even though I rarely use my windshield wiper fluid.

1. every vehicle I have used RainX on suffers severe wiper chatter after and 2. Aquapel lasts about 6 months with one application and doesn't cause wiper chatter.

I still have a couple of bottles, I just won't use it on the front window anymore.
