Rusted chrome tips, any suggestions?

Rusted chrome tips, any suggestions?

Hey guys. I have dual 4" chrome tips which have taken a beating over the years. There is some rust toward the back of them which bothers me a little. Anyone have suggestions on how to remove it? I know its not going to all disappear, but any progress would be nice. Thanks.

Hrmm... I have had good luck with flitz in the past. You sure this is just surface rust right?

Yea its only surface rust. It's concentrated toward the back, so even something that would take it out a little would help. Anything I could find at Salvo or Advance that would help?

well, some chrome polish could do the trick. I know at the Ace Hardware I work at, we sell the flitz. Get your drill and a buff ball and that should do the trick. I have seen CLR take surface rust off also with a little elbow grease. Good Luck!

Aluminum foil and water. Or maybe I used CLR too I dont remember. The whole bottom side, halfway up, on my tips were complete rust...absolutley no chrome that you could see, and I was able to take off all the rust and bring it back to complete chrome.

Crumple up the aluminum foil, dip it in the water (or was it CLR?? AHHHH dont remember) then scrub like no other.

When your done do a nice polish job on them and your done

No, the foil does not scratch the chrome either.

Ok so by combining the responses, I think I'm going to go with this method:

1. Use crumbled aluminum foil and CLR.
2. Dip the foil in the CLR and scrub in the rusted areas.
3. Dry with a terry cloth.
4. Polish with Meguiar's All Metal Polish (has worked amazing for me on chrome bumpers).

Thanks for the help guys, anything else I should do? Gow about to remove scratch and swirl marks on them, or will the polish help with that too?

I used clr on my 6yr old stock rusted tip, I was only successful at bringing the top back to life the rest was all un-removable rust.... but yeah Flitz, or clr, good stuff, the crl brought my ATV wheels back to looking nice

get a can of neverdull. and then put another coat of chrome wax and you should be good for awhile.

you can also use the fine steel wool. i had that same problem with my old truck and used the real fine steel wool and it worked great.

What kind of fine steel wool? Where do I get that? Or is is something like a brillo pad...
