A week should be OK if you have them waxed (Only wax learcoated rims). If you're trying to be really cautious, though, 2x per week should be good.
Yes. It's synthetic polymers (redundant, I guess) provide a superior protection for the price and resist high temparatures caused by driving and braking, a feature unmatched by a traditional carnauba wax. (man, I should write commercials)

I had time today so I washed them with Mequiars wheel cleaner. We don't have that much snow in MO, so hopefully this won't be a problem. When the weather gets nice again, I'm going to have to give the truck a good cleaning with a wax.

Believe it or not, if you have factory chrome plated wheels, you can go quite some time without washing or waxing them before you start to see corrosion. Aftermarket wheels on the other hand, do not hold up nearly as well. The big difference is the quality and thickness of the plating. (Some folks say that factory chrome wheels are also clear coated, but I have not been able to verify that.)
As for what to use when you wax them, most of us would recommend a synthetic as opposed to the standard Carnauba wax. The reason? Synthetics hold up to the heat (from your brakes) much better. You might consider Zaino, Mothers Synwax or NXT - all good products.
